2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Hello,

Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).

Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...

Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).

Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse sad

Thanks for any help at all.

Hi derek , i got similar thing and its very possible that its sjogren in my case. The sinuses mucosa dries and the body overreacts producing more mucus. My ent told me that its an allergic rhinitis but all my tests for allergies are ok. Maybe in your case its worth it to check it out. Hope you get well soon.

A Private ENT doctor recommended laser uvula removal followed by turbinate reduction, both helped with breathing and the Turbinoplasty turned the clock back about 10 years with regards to my nose being stuffy but I still have the constant throat clearing. A change of diet and different nasal spray is next on the agenda.

One of the signs of hiatal hernia is coughing. Seventy percent of women have this, so I am thinking this is a great possibility.

You know, I just found out I have two hiatal hernias from my gallbladder being removed. Seems they beat me up a bit as they also collapsed my right lung to get the GB out. I do think this is it. The cough quits here and there and I think it depends what my hernia is doing.

    Please please please reply Derek!!!!

Im wishing for death as i cant take the burning air, the inflamed and so swollen sinuses and the terrible head pain from all the inflammation. My teeth, gums and roof of my mouth hurts. A few times my nose would drip blood after the burning gets unbearable! Ive been dealing with this and thick mucous which i wouldnt call post nasal drip. Its constantly there and way too thick to drip.

Its been going on for almost 2 years now. Last year i was in antibiotics 5 times. Constant fevers. Emergency room doctors just brushing me off. One doctor told me not to come back until Ive had a fever for more than 6 days! My fever was 104 degrees and on the 5th day it wouldnt go down with a double dose of Tylenol and Advil. Spent so many hours at the hospital to get nowhere and had to go to walk ins the next day just desperate for something to help. I dis learn i have a deviated septum but inly mild. Also was told i have mild sinusitis.

Vitamin D is flagged as low on my blood work and my doctor says its probably due to being on Nexium (max dose 80mg) and still not helping. Id like to know what you learned about gabapentin and the possible connection to nerves and sinuses. I have 3 pinched nerves, 2 which are in my neck.

Ive been trying to figure out what direction to lead my doctor as he isnt doing much! Prescribed Nexium after insisting i do 8oz nasal rinse on each nostril twice per day with Pulmicort added to the rinse. I did for 6 months and kept telling my doctor its not helping as i do not have any snot or mucous coming out with the rinse. Its like a sinus infection times 10 without any hope for healing! Only people such as yourself could begin to understand how much this affects ones life! My relationship is suffering. I just want to feel better so i can go in with life as concentrating and having conversations with people is even difficult due to the pain.

    Hello guys,

I made a new account just to give here a reply since I have been struggling with this problem as well.

5-6 days ago I started having "something" in my throat and even if I swallowed..it did not go away and pain in my throat in the morning.

After reading a bit on the internet, I started a diet with food that does not contain mucus since I came to the conclusion that I was eating a lot of this kind of food daily.Just to name a couple: bananas, red meat, bread, potatoes,1l of milk daily, butter. Besides, I bought also some claritine pills since I am an allergic person.

The next day the pain my throat became irritated because of the mucus and I felt pain the whole day but at least the sensation that I had something stuck in inside it disappeared. i treated this for 2 days with steam inhalation.

The pain disappeared but at every 2-3 minutes I was finding myself spitting.

in regards to my nose, I have a septum deviation but I was able to breath without problems. However, I had some mucus stuck in one of the holes.

What I did next was to learn a bit more about this and I found out that this might be caused by allergies or also acid reflux because even if you don't have symptoms, you might have this problem while your sleep and that is the reason for the throat pain that you feel when you wake up.

I have seen also some doctors on some forums recommand the below treatment:

Nasal irrigation - boil a cup of water with a tablespoon of salt. Add the solution in a small bottle and do the irrigation 3 times a day. Once the solution reaches your throat, you spit and repeat the process until your nose is clear.

Oily vitamin A that you add in your nose after the irrigation.

Sinupret - this pills are made from plants and it is for acute and chronic inflammation of the paranasal sinuses.

A treatment for acid reflux. In my case I took Omeran but other examples are omez or almagel.

Also, before bed I take an anti acid pill. In my case I take Rennie.

Last..exclude from your diet for a while vinegar, soda, citric fruits , pickles and any other type of sour food.

I started this treatment 2 days ago and even if this morning I still had some symptoms, in the last 3-4 ours since my last nasal irrigation the problem disappeared.

It seems that now I don't have mucus in one hole of my nose anymore and I can breath with the same intensity through both.

I hope my experience will help you!

    Hi everyone,

I am thankful I found this forum. I honestly thought no one out there could relate. I've been suffering from this chronic illness for so many years. I am 23 now. I, too, have a deviated septum, so I wonder if there is a correlation. This condition has taken a massive toll on the quality of my life. If I swallow my mucus I become sick for a week, so I try my best not to let it take over me. Doctors do not know a damn thing. I feel like this is a virus. Most of the time when conditions are very good, my symptoms are very mild. But once in a while they become unbearable.

I am a fitness enthusiast. However, there are days when where I just cannot exercise because of this. Eating foods and drinking fluids become more difficult as it leads to more mucus production.

I hope everyone suffering from this will one day be cured.

I am so glad I found this. I have the exact same problem - thick white/clear secretion dripping down the back of my throat all day. Only time I get relief is when I lay down. I experienced it for the first time in January. Was diagnosed with sinus infection. Took antibiotics and the infection cleared thought PND stayed for several more weeks. It eventually went away for couple of months and now has returned. Been dealing with it for a week now. It's constant. I do have severely deviated septum and have bad allergies, though right now, PND is the only thing going on. No other symptoms at all. I've tried all sorts of treatments except neti pot. It's frustrating and stressful. Any remedies that have worked for you all?

    Hi

I have been suffering with mucus at the back of my throat for 10 years now with still no cure. Been to the doctors numerous times with me then diagnosed as having post nasal drip. I've seen an ent, had a camera down my throat, tried nasal sprays but nothing works. I always need to clear my throat but I'm really struggling to sleep now as it seems to be getting worse than before. My phlegm is always very clear but hard to dislodge from my throat. Has anyone come across any cures or anything that helps? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks
