2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Hello,

Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).

Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...

Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).

Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse sad

Thanks for any help at all.

Update: I am suffering a lot less than I used to. I made some significant changes in my lifestyle that I would like to share. I cut out processed sugar and unnatural/unhealthy foods from my diet. The only sugars I consume are from fruits, vegetables, honey, and some dairy products. I avoid lactose in milk, as it is a trigger. I avoid smoking of all sorts, drinking, masturbation, and anything known to deplete me of vital cellular growth in my body. I exercise regularly, take cold showers several times a month, and practice intermittent fasting every now and then.

I have felt much better than I ever did in all the years of my suffering. I hope this message gets to people. Live strong!

I see a lot of the same story. There are very few solutions. I did fix my issue which is the same as most I have read. i cut out everything with Tomatoes!! 3 months which is harder then you might think. no salsa. no spaghetti. no pizza . i looked on the back of everything to see if it was alright. also along with that nothing acidic like pineapple juice. oranges. etc etc.

unfortunately i moved from California to Iowa and I have the same issue and again cut out tomatoes but i believe this time it is allergies but it is winter and most people just look at me like it can't be. so... i would definitely try it. i had a hacking nasty spit habit for 3 years before on the ent list of foods to avoid was written in pen. tomatoes just never occurred to me and sure as *&# it was amazing. 1 food messed me up for years. just find your thing. could be multiple things but it is worth a shot if you don't want to live with it any longer.

and i would be so interested in how it works out for anyone who tries. it was like night and day within a week or 2.

ps i do smoke and it wasn't that:)

love coffee and it wasn't that 😃

    best highlights of the process!!

    Hi!

iv been reading through loads of replies on this thread.

i am in a very similar situation to alot of people here.

possible deviated septum, allergic to anything that is in the air, post nasal drip, always sneezing and always got itchy eyes.ears and throat,

when i have a bad episode of PND i can be left to feel very sickly for a few days after, with some

mild to moderate stomach pain. does anyone else share this problem?

hi i had similar issues, i realised these kinda things is all related to our diet in this generation. the diet is so processed. this causes our body to be allergic to literally anything because its just not organic or real food. for me the post nasal drip is related to gluten because my digestion is not good atm and when i eat gluten it causes more mucous. the key to all this is to sort your diet and lifestyle out just for a couple of weeks and see what happens. id highly recomend speaking to a good ayervedic doctor

I have PND after tonsillectomy, septal straightening and FESS surgery. I've tried almost everything. Based on several years of experience, the only pharmaceuticals that help are:

    1. Dexaven (Dexamethasone ) 4 mg/ml dissolved in saline and nasal spray made so
    2. Montelukast pills leukotriene receptor antagonist.

These medications will not cure PND, but they do reduce PND discomfort, mucus viscosity and amount.

For some people the procedure of radio - reducing the turbinates also helps

I am so thankful for finding your post to this situation. It has been three years plus that I have experienced mucus, thick rubbery gunk, flowing into my mouth only on the right side.

I've read many of the posts, all wonderful, all expressing what I have been struggling with for three plus years. The gunk now clings to my right palate 24/7, 365. I have been seen by three ENTs, one suggested it was a dental problem, another said I had a growth, another said I have a deviated septum prescribed two antibiotics, one steroid, and Flonase to treat what a appeared to be an infected left sinus, the most recent diagnosed Gastroesophageal reflux disease , she prescribed a medication that promotes bone fractures (I am waiting for a total hip replacement and both knee replacements, Really? I tossed the medication. (But the drainage is from the right side) he could not explain; had an adverse reaction to two antibiotics so he prescribed to more. I did not finish the antibiotics (A 28-day treatment, and never took the steroid). I've been seen by 3 Endodontists (willing to have teeth pulled to stop the gunk, teeth, gums, roots all okay. I suspected a tooth root entered the sinus, they all said "no". I still have my teeth), 2 dentists who handed me treatment plans in excess of $5,000 for replacement crowns and fillings. A dentist that suspected Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve. This diagnosis led to 2 CT Scans, 1 MRI, 1 Ultrasound, 3 Panoramic dental x-rays, endless individual tooth and teeth x-rays. An oral pathologist who said there was nothing wrong, I just had to stop playing with the gunk!

I explained to each professional the rubbery mucus is in my mouth constantly, during a hot shower I run the water into my mouth, as soon as the flow ends the mucus is still there against the roof of my mouth on on my tongue. At night I sleep with a cloth beneath the facial cheek on my pillow to catch the drainage. After a deep sleep, when I awake I have a mouth full of awful tasting mucus, it is awful.

The mucus affects my speaking (I unintentionally spit), drinking beverages is cumbersome, eating is almost impossible as the mucus is always on my tongue and on the roof of my mouth.

At times, not every day, but most days, suddenly a gush of mucus chokes me and I feel a flood of the stuff coming into my mouth. I hawk it up and spit it into a tissue. As so many have explained their experience, the mucus in my tissue is bubbly, clear, and sticky, some time rubbery.

I have noticed that stress and increased activity increases the mucus flowing into my mouth. Housework hindered by mucus!

I just ordered the Nutri-Biotic capsules and liquid. I did not order the nasal spray. I may later. I am very hopeful. Again I am so thankful for the abundance of information and wanted to contribute my experience if it helps another. I had NO IDEA this problem was so wide-spread throughout the world. What are doctors doing?????????

Also, I have spent thousands of dollars searching for a resolution.

Dam! I'm domed! Been suffering same issue for over a years now and nothing seems to help either. I have other ailment, rheumatoid arthritis. Moved to a country with poor air quality and housing and started experiencing a lot of upper respiratory issues... started with sinus infection and was told to do nasal rinse, which resulted in dry nasals and causes bad nose bleeds. Had to get nose bleed cauterized, then ear infections which resulted in ear perforation! Now post nasal drip causing constant ear infections! still have very dry nasal and saline rinse still causes nose bleeds. Tried 3 steroid sprays and none work so far.

Anyone tried Dymista (Azelastine+Fluticasone)? What's your result?

    FYI:

    Went to a small island for a week vacation and my post nasal drip seems to be gone. Get back home and it's bad again. Begging hubby to move to a tropical island but it's way too expensive! And lack of medical resources {sigh}

I think it's the humidity that helps, I have suffered for almost 20 years and until recently a Caribbean holiday would cure my symptoms, unfortunately as it has got worse over the years even a holiday doesn't help.

I have suffered with a post nasal drip and really thick throat since the one and only flu jab I have ever had in late 2017. I had the most awful flu illness a couple of months later (the only time in my life I have had flu!!), was desperately ill, and then was left with this. I have also been suffering from left sided tinnitus since, where my eustacian tube was so blocked up and has never cleared - now dysfunctional! It is horrendous. It is worse in damp weather and when I am stressed or nervous. I have seen many ENT consultants, had MRIs, cameras, rinses, sprays, everything and they can't find anything. It is so bad that I had to give up one of my jobs - one which entails public speaking - because I can't get through 30 minutes without having to clear my throat - but as you all so say - nobody cares!

Just now discovering this site so sorry, but I haven't read through all the posts yet- just wondering if anyone has found relief from this seemingly sudden (going on 5 months for me) onset of being unable to swallow without contorting all the muscles in your throat.

Has anyone found any relief from giving up mucus forming foods from their diet? (butter, cheese, etc)? Scrolling around, it appears there are many who suffer with this. Hope we all find relief soon!

Challenge: on a day you're home and not busy, make a conscious effort to breathe solely through your nose. Use a nasal opening tape strip to help your nasal passages open up and fight through the first hour. You'll find that in time your nasal passages relax and allow more airflow. Your mucous buildup and congestion will follow suit. If you find some relief from this simple change in your breathing method then check out

"Breath" by James Nestor 🙌. My dad has had the same problems his whole life, so have I. I've just found this book and done the challenge and it's proving to be life-changing. Good luck to you all, life is already hard without struggling with a basic element of living ❤️

Hello. I'm from Russia this problem has been with me for 7 months now. It all started with thyroiditis and a strong stress. I studied a lot of literature and came to the conclusion that both of these factors, even separately, can cause this problem. The work of the autonomic nervous system is associated with the release of fluids, as well as thyroid hormones. I felt a little better after the thyroiditis had passed, but then the problem returned. now I try to be less nervous and monitor the level of hormones. also oral contraceptives (estrogen) in theory can cause it. try checking this part. good luck.
