2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Hello,

Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).

Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...

Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).

Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse sad

Thanks for any help at all.

I am going through the same crappppp

Slowly it crept up on me now I'm connecting the knots. I'm only 31 and already have dysphasia I thought to my self. I stop eating in public or going out to restaurants for fear of choking on food and the embarrassment. I'll be seeing my doctor soon because this past Friday I ended up in the ER with an emergency endoscopy. I get you , it sucks . I'm sure will find help . Keep me updated.

Jamie- cut ALL sugars, fruits, breads, pasta, potatoes, and alcohol, then your symptoms will likely go away. If you have success with this then you probably have candida, like 70% of the western population. I had the same as you described and it was a mind-boggling simple fix with great results. Oil of oregano capsules, zinc and probiotics will help too, if you can quit the sugars. You'll lose some weight, breath better and save a lot of money.

This will be my last post, I am better thank God!! Silent REflux seems to be the problem for most of us. Not ACID REFLUX >>>>>>>>SILENT REFLUX> google it you will be amazed !!!!!

I hope everyone gets well this year. The answer is diet and Proton pump inhibitors and Zantac and Gaviscon. PPI's will get it under control but if you can avoid it dont stay on it long... change your diet to a n Acid reflux diet . this is the most important!!!

I am beginning to agree with Neil45382. I think he is right. After several months of paying attention to my diet and watching how it affects my mucous and phlegm, I am going to try the suggestions for the treatment of silent reflux and will report back in a few weeks or months.

This sounds exactly like my husband he coughs this up every minute ever since he had since surgery in 2005 and it’s 2017 he is miserable . It only goes away when sleeping. He had one dr say it was because of the surgery that the sinus dr caused it and it is post nasal drip that he did not have before the surgery any tips or ideas would be appreciated

I believe it starts with anxiety...either known or subconsciously...usally after a tramatic event, fix the anxiety and you will see relief...

Hi derekjp did your problem ever get solved ? I’m in the same boat it’s killing my life style seen loads of doctors but nothing

Cut your sugar, carbs and alcohol. Take oil of oregano capsules, and you’ll see a difference in three days. It’s hard to do at first but better than swimming in phlegm everyday.

Thanks for the reply Darren. I have had sinus surgery 3 times now and nothing.! Tried a few other things like sea water spray it calms it down a little but not for long. I Nielmed sinus rinse 3 times a day but stuff only comes out in the morning(this is when it’s at it’s worse) 6am I can’t breath through my nose at all.!! I don’t drink allot , about 4 pints a week. I don’t have sugar in my drinks , I do however have allot of carbs but I always have done for years I’m 42 now and this all came on 4 Year’s ago. Seen loads of doctors and they don’t have a clue.!

Great I will give them a try. How many of these tablets do u take ?

Just one or two capsules a day. But you’ve got to drop the beer habit, and the carbs, and any cookies, candies, and desserts. Bread and pasta included!

It’s torture, I know, but you’ll notice after a few days if it’s the sugars in  carbs that’s effecting you. Two months of this diet should get your gut right.

      Hi darren01530,

Would that include cutting out fruit as well because of the sugar content? Thanks.

Yeah, fruit too. Try it for a few days to a week, you should see results.

Hi darren01530, is that the way you are going to have to eat forever?

No, I gave up on doctors and their nutty prescriptions. For example, I had an allergy test and the ENT showed me the results were negative. And then he prescribes allergy medicine! I just googled the symptoms (endless phlegm, foggy-headed, dizzy spells, heart palpitations, fungus-infected toenails), and started taking categories of foods out of my diet, and kept notes. It all came back to sugar and beer. I realized that I was taking in 100 grams/day of sugar thru fruits/carbs/alcohol/dairy/desserts. The recommended sugar intake per day is 25 grams. A pint of stout has about 30 grams of carb-based sugar. A piece of cake 40 grams. A candy bar 20 grams. Three days after I quit sugar and held off on beers with the boys, the hacking and throat clearing was gone. I read that 70% of the people living in western cultures have this health issue. I'm not surprised. Believe me it's worth a try.
