2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Posted , 216 users are following.

Hello,

Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).

Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...

Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).

Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse sad

Thanks for any help at all.

    Hi fellow sufferers,

Gosh I’m still suffering...glue like mucus stuck in the back of nose and top of my throat, and my saliva feels very sticky, I don’t know which causes which. I can’t stop myself from constantly swallowing my saliva, although the “thing” couldn’t be swallowed down and I feel the sensation may get worse as I swallow too much.

I did the gastroscopy few days ago and didn’t find any acid reflux so I believe it’s related to my nose. But the ENT endoscopy didn’t find anything neither...is there anything could be missed by endoscopy? maybe I should also take an X ray or CT scan? I really don’t know...

I know anxiety can make things worse. But if the symptoms are just “all in my head” said by my GP, it’s way too much, hard to be convinced. I can actually feel the mucus/phlegm slowly dripping down and if I’m so lucky I can hack it up(most time it’s just stuck there). It’s white clear coloured and very sticky. It also affects my voice somehow. This is not my illusion.

This has to stop, I want nothing more but my normal life back. It’s just getting harder and harder to stay positive and “try not to focus on it”.

I’m checking back this post every single day, at least I feel I’m not alone...Anyone in this discussion has got better? Or got any new thoughts from doctors?

My mucus is just like yours, white and thick. It seems it is better if I stay away from dairy, as that makes mucus itself. Some days are better than others. I am beginning to think it is the stuff they are spraying in the air for climate change. It can't be good. If it's not the same each day, then it has to be related to environment, I say.

I don’t eat much diary and sugar...don’t know why this began and got worse all of a sudden weeks ago. I drink a lot of water but didn’t seem to help...do you also feel that your saliva is sticky? Mine is very sticky and I don’t know if it’s one of the reasons why the mucus cannot go down smoothly.

Hi, I just started having this issue a 6 weeks ago, I have shortness of breath. My sticky mucus goes down my throat and chest. My nose is clear. I went to paleontologist, did chest XRay, and my lungs and bronchus are clear. I do have excessive sticky mucus that I have to clear constantly. I even took antibiotics (given by paleontologist) didn't help. Currently trying allergy medication, still doesn't make much difference. I think this issue started after taking three antibiotics for a different issue. Now I am stuck with this one. I lost my energy, since sometimes my chest gets heavy till I clear. What helps me with mucus is clearing the nostril passage with sniffing in water or saline water. I have tried mucus loosening syrup, etc.. tried steam therapy, but nothing really helps. The only good thing about this is my nostril is clear and I can sleep well. My problem is mainly during the day.

I did some research, in my opinion this is yeast, and to get rid of it is you have to eliminate the sugar, carbs, pastries, ice cream, dairy, fruit juices, white bread.

What helps, you might want to check this site.

I do want to get  rid of this problem it just changed the quality of my life.

ok  here some tips for managing mucus.

try removing all dairy from your diet.

      that helps me

invest in a tongue cleaner or scraper to help rid baceria.

i stick a finger full of bi carbinate of soda at the back of my throat it seems to disperse mucus.

drink loads more water to flush the body.

      gargling helps too.

It can also  come from a bacterial infection. Tonsil stones or a gammy tooth.

these are the things that i have checked out and to be fair i think i have control over it now.

Thanks Bongowokbin. I don’t eat diary and I drink plenty of water but I don’t know why it just didn’t get any better...I was thinking that maybe I should started with anti-anxiety medication, if it’s either because of my increasing sensitivity of the nerve, or because anxiety can cause more mucus buildup.

How do doctors tell if there’s bacterial infection or tonsil stone? I did a blood test, white blood cell is normal. Also the ENT endoscopy didn’t find anything. Does it mean I can rule out these two possibilities?

By the way, where is your mucus stuck at? Mine is between the back of my nose and the top of my laryngeal. Swallowing my saliva is like a nightmare...

Hi jasmin, I don’t eat much sugar and diary...I did blood test and urine test and my white blood cell is normal, which shows no infection, does that mean I can rule out yeast/Candida?

      Hi raven0801,

After some research, this is what I tried past few days, and knock on wood, it looks like it is getting better. I am not sure if this kind of stuff show in the blood test.

      1. First of all, I tried to clear the mucus by sniffing in water few times twice a day, morning and night

      2. Right after clearing all mucus in the throat (since sniffed water will go to your throat with mucus), I used potassium permanganate water to wash my nostrils, past nasal by sniffing into my nose again, then clearing the throat again (just use the very very tiny amount in the water that it turns into very light purple color, this has to be really light - just few particles is enough from the powder). Too much is not good. This helped killing any bacteria or candida/yeast. At first you will feel dried out, but don't worry. Just drink lots of liquid to losen up the mucus. You can also use the pomp to put water into your nose. Sniffing goes a lot deeper.

      3. Then I also used Oragano Oil. Add 4 drops into the half glass water, then drink it twice a day and gurgle your mouth and throat before swallowing it

Read the benefits at this location.

      4. Also drink good quality probiotics ( I juse this one  11-Strain, half spoon powder, once a day in a half glass water)

      5. I also used coconut oil. Just put one teaspoon into your mouth and hold it for 15 min, twice daily. Morning and night. This will get all the toxins into your mouth and you spit it out. Clears your mouth from bad taste if there is any. Read this article.

      6. Cleansing your system is also going to be good (optional). I just start doing it.

Today, I feel much better and very little mucus. I will be doing this till I feel better. ?What I am doing is all natural, it will not harm. I believe my symptoms started after taking antibiotics back to back.

Hope this helps to anyone who reads this and tries. I will update you how mine goes. But I already started seeing difference on the second day.

Good luck to everyone and hope you all get better with this.

      Regards

Hi!! I have very similar problems that are active at night, especially when laying down. I’m frustrated and tried everything that I could find. It keeps me awake at night and I’m “snorking” (oppose to snoring) in my sleep. The only way to get it out is to hack it orally. My nostrils are also dry in the middle of all of it, I keep saline sprays, nasal strips, and even pop a handful of Altoids to get relief in bed.

Have you found anything that has worked for you??? I’m so desperate, is even try to watch a sad show so I can get the tears flowing and then able to try to blow it all out.

Hi Siri, I suffered from the same exact thing. I never knew about the word “snort” up until I suffered from it. The snort woke me up when I was about to fall asleep and couldn’t go back to sleep. I tried ENT, did sleep study but the couldn’t find anything. Funny thing is I snorted while my throat was dry. So one doctor suggested a CPAP machine and also to loose weight. I occasionally smoked cigarettes. So I stopped smoking and started using the CPAP machine and started working out to loose weight. Now it has been a year since I started getting good sleep. I sometimes get the snorting and I don’t know why but it’s almost gone.

So if you are a smoker I suggest you stop smoking. I don’t know if the CPAP machine helped me psychologically. But my weight loss has helped. Let me know if I can help. Please email me, I really have suffered I don’t want anyone to go through this. It’s the worst thing.

So since me and many of others already got tested for multiple things and didn’t find anything wrong, I’ve been thinking logically about things might trigger or worsen the issue, I wonder if people have the same symptoms also have the following habits like I do:

    - Constant swallowing your saliva

Because you always want to swallow the mucus down but you just can’t, so you repeatly doing this.

It may tighten your throat and increase the sensitivity of “mucus”

or it may aggravate the sinus/throat causing more phlegm

or it may dry out your mouth by developing thick/sticky saliva and the mucus is harder to go down smoothly

    - Constantly trying to suck it out of your mouth/hack it up

Your body may get used to this, so instead of coming out of your nasal passage as snot, it keeps dripping down and being stuck there, causing a constant post nasal drip sensation.

I’ve been having those two habits since my symptoms started. Those are just my guessing and I’m not sure if they can aggravate the problem. If it makes sense maybe we should all try force ourselves not to do those to see if it gets better? Anyone has any thoughts?

Yes I do both those things too but I also blow my nose a lot. It's not an either/or thing for me. Most of the year I have allergic rhinitis where basically my nose turns into a water faucet with thin clear fluid like tears running out of it all day and night. Sometimes allergy meds help with this if I'm consistent with taking them. Then, just for variety I guess, I get a cold a couple times a year and then I get regular snot and postnasal drip and cough etc. This stuff we're talking about is sort of like the postnasal cold stuff without the respiratory symptoms, right? Just the constant hawking, spitting, swallowing.

    • Posted

Yes but the difference is I don’t have runny nose and I have no snot in my nostrils...only thing in me is the mucus/phlegm stuck at back of nose/soft palate/throat.

I don’t remember I’ve ever had any allergy to anything...but if it’s allergy I’m supposed to have runny nose and sneezing right? Can allergy only cause mucus in throat?

    • Posted

Yes, I have the exact same thing. No runny nose, no sneezing and I have tried allergy medication, doesn't help. Have you looked my other email, on my new methods ? I can't seem to find my second message to you.

    • Posted

Yes I just saw the list you wrote down. I’m glad you got better. So you don’t use the Neil Med or Neti Pot? I’m kind of afraid to sniff the water from my nose into my throat, because I’m scared of choking lol gosh I’m just someone who has high sensitivity in certain areas...

I will try the Oragano oil and start taking probiotics.

How do you keep your nostrils moist? I’m thinking if dry nose can be the cause of thicker mucus stuck at the back instead of coming out as snot.

    • Posted

THAT is a good idea, you can buy Ocean to moisturize your nose.
    • Posted

Thanks I will try it. Is that a saline spray?

I’ve been using salinex spray and didn’t find my nose moist after. Have been looking for some nasal oil or gel stuffs.

    • Posted

Yes, saline. I have seen a few people say they got this after a cold that wouldn't go away, and that happened to me, so how can we ask how many people experienced that too?

    • Posted

I don't think the two things are related. I've had the drippy nose allergies since I moved 8 years ago, they also cause my eyes to itch. This is completely different. The mucus started more recently-after the flu/ cold that hit the US in December 2017 (I live in southern Ca). I got pneumonia, but the mucus in the throat just never went away after everything else did. Currently my allergies aren't bothering me so I have no drippy nose and no snot either. One of my meds causes dry mouth and my dr thought maybe that was what was causing the post-nasal mucus so I've gone off it as of a few days ago-too soon to know. I'm trying amitriptyline instead but one its symptoms is dry mouth too.

***It would be interesting if we could put together some kind of survey to see how long people have had it, what they think triggered it, what their symptoms/ sensations are, what they've tried, what's helped, what hasn't etc. Someone just recently suggested something similar I think

    • Posted

I recently have dry mouth as well, but I’m not on any medication. My saliva feels sticky and the back of my soft palate and throat feels dry and sticky too, and that’s basically where the mucus stuck at.

That might be a good point, I was thinking too if dry mouth is the reason that the mucus becomes more gluey and hard to go down my throat.

Did your doctor explain more about how dry mouth causes post nasal drip?

      Raven,

I have two theories how mine started. First one is taking antibiotics back to back for a UTI that was not going away. While trying to cleans my bladder, I was drinking water with backing soda, which made me throw up in the morning, and the food just came back to my throat and threw the nose (yuck of course). I tried cleaning my nose very well by sniffing into water, but I am guessing there might be some residue or small particle might be left behind causing all that bacteria or mucus. I said I took antibiotic, but that didn't help. Now cleaning my nose daily with water and Saline water seems making it better ( I see some tiny black dots - it could be dust or make my theory correct).

Anyway, thought I should share if people had similar incidents. It can be easily some stuck food particle causing all that fungi mucus. I don't believe mine is cause by dryness.

My next step is keep cleaning with water and other cleansing liquids until it disappears.

Just a couple of thoughts: my Dr didn't elaborate as to why she thought dry mouth might be correlated, and actually didn't specify if she thought it was causal or another symptom. My supposition regarding this is that typically the body has a histamine release that produces fluid ( i.e. mucus, tears) to try to rid the body of what is causing an irritation. So if the body thinks the mouth is dry it is trying to lubricate it but the response goes wild. BUT if it's a histamine response then shouldn't an antihistamine prevent it? Or taking cortico-steroids? So I'm going to try antihistamines again, even tho I'm having no other allergy symptoms. (Can't try prednisone as I'd been on it 17 years for auto-immune disease and just went thru hell last year titrating down from it).

Also I'm wondering about a few other seeming commonalities with others here:

*several of us had this begin after lingering colds

*several of us have previously used antibiotics

*many of us use or have used saline solutions to help decrease mucus

*most of us experience this as being located in nasopharyngeal area

*allergy medications don't seem generally useful

      *anti-anxiety meds don't seem useful

*our Drs are stumped, even EGGs ( ear nose throat specialists)

*unless there is a concurrent bacterial infection, antibiotics don't seem useful

*some people find certain conditions aggravate or alleviate symptoms

WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK? IS THERE A WAY TO MASS POST THIS TO GET EVERYONE'S RESPONSES AND ADDITIONAL IDEAS?

I have all the exact symptoms that you have mentioned except that it also effects my ears. They also seem to block up to and crackle when I blow my nose . The ent have fitted grommets on a few occasions but they fall out and back to square one.

Doe this effect anyone else’s ears ?

      Hi Perry

Yes my ears are effected and all sometimes blocked and all make me partially deaf in one ear, also now I have buzzing in my head that’s very annoying. I use the nasal flush and that makes them pop as well.

Sounds exactly how I feel. Do you have decent days and bad days ? It varies for me more bad than good though been like this 5 years now surly someone somewhere has found a cure

I would like those whose mucus thing began with a neverending cold to add their names to see how many there are.

Did anyone notice a change when H1N1 flu shots was first administered back in 2009?  I started experience symptoms around 2011.  I took that flu shot in 2009 and 2010 (because they threatened my job if I didn’t).

      Hi Perry,

My ears are affected too. I thought my right ear might have Eustachian tube dysfunction, because when I go on the highway, like when I speed up, my ears feel blocked so bad no matter how hard I swallow my saliva, they didn’t used to be like that. Also my right ear sometimes make weird sound like “bang bang bang” especially after I belch(not pulsatile tinnitus)

I don’t know if those are all related.
