2 years of throat clearing, thick mucus and post nasal drip sensation (allergy/reflux/nerve?)

Hello,

Suffering for 2 years with sensation of thick mucus stuck at the back of the nose, which I'm often able to hock up out of my mouth (clear but very "snotty" and like thick glue when it's in a tissue).

Sometimes it gets in my throat and I often clear my throat all day long too. I guess this is post-nasal drip, but not watery or thin (like you apparently get from an allergy), it's very thick and feels awful like a lump or glob that won't move, until I hock it up, but within minutes it's back again...

Tried all reflux and allergy medications (double-dose PPIs, steroid sprays, allergy RAST tests, antihistamines, singulair, antihistamine sprays, nasal irrigation, gastrocopy, multiple nasal/throat endoscopes, sinus CT scans), and they can't identify the problem... All of my symptoms disappear completely, when I eat or lay down with my head to either side (which I find very odd! Equally, if I take pseudoephridrine (oral decongestant), my symptoms go too (but I know that's not a long term option).

Anyone ever dealt with anything similar or know what to suggest next?I've been thinking of self-treating with amitriptyline (10mg at night) and gabapentin (100mg 3x per day), to see if this is a hypersensitivity/nerve issue. I have absolutely no other symptoms and can't live much longer like this, it's completely ruined my life and things are just getting worse sad

Thanks for any help at all.

Maybe this won't help anyone else except me but worth a try since many of you are suffering. If you are like I was where you don't know exactly what the issue is and the "specialists" you are seeing don't have a clue either then you could try speaking to your dentist instead of your doctor. I had fluid on one side - ear, nose and throat which was literally driving me absolutely crazy and many other symptoms like dizziness, fatigue etc. I solved my issue completely by accident when my brand new dentist informed me I had an infection caused by tooth decay. She said "can you feel that little lump with your tongue". I said "yes it's been there for years". I did not have toothache and the lump didn't bother me at all but the dentist informed me it was an infection full of puss etc. I immediately started telling her about all the symptoms I was having which I had no idea were connected to my tooth. She basically told me there and then that this is what all my problems were about and she was totally correct because as soon as the tooth came out all my problems were magically solved. Good luck everyone.

Hi there, I had a turbinate coblation done a week ago (cauterisation of the inferior turbinate). I have suffered for years with post nasal drip and swollen turbinates and even though I am still healing and nose is a bit stuffy I can tell that the surgery has been a success as I can definitely breathe better and my post nasal drip has dried up so much. My post nasal drip was so bad after eating that i would have to excuse myself from the table to go and cough! it was horrendous. I could never plan work calls for early morning either as i would be so hoarse. I tried everything to cure it: antihistamines, cough syrups, saline plus machine, saline spray and neti pots.. all at a lot of expense! plus numerous trips to the dr to be handed more and more sprays... when i went to see the consultant he told me these are addictive and i shouldnt be using anything..

I was so fed up and actually quite down because of it. It had a massive impact on my life. To try and cure it i did a septoplasty and had high hopes but it had no impact on the post nasal drip (much to my disappointment).

For me the coblation surgery has so far been lifechanging as my voice was constantly hoarse due to post nasal drip and i was always coughing. I would definitely recommend it and the recovery afterwards hasnt been too bad in all honesty. Hope you feel better soon!

    Dear Friends,

Hello to you all. I am writing from the Netherlands and I think I have beaten post nasal drip and I want to share my story with you. This maybe a long one. I want to write it all, maybe you would be interested in how it evolved and developed and how it ended, at least for now, for me.

I am a 50ish woman. My first ever sinus related experience was in the year Kramer vs Kramer came to the cinemas. We were going to the movie theatre and Kramer vs Kramer was on. It was snowing and I vomited in the street. Vomiting when it was cold / hot, when I did sweat, when I did not dry my hair etc followed me all my life.

Another experience is the time when we went to the GP, I was 5 - 6 by now, the doctor had told e not to eat cucumber, tomatoes and strawberries because I was allergic to them and she said I developed a nasal tumor.

When I was 9 I had fungae on my nails, hair and eczama on my hands.

When I was around 11, I told my mother there was a very thick thing in my throat.

All my life I had running nose, chronic sinusitis, nasal drip and I sneezed a lot in May / June.

3 years ago, I moved to Belgium and met an Indian GP over there. Who was against western medicine. He told me that allergies and sinusitis are a product of bacteries and not my DNA. So he told me that if I uploaded at least 20000 mg of vegan Vitamin C per day for at least a month, I would get better.

I found this very controversial and declined his treatment. However, I changed my view about my chronic sinusitis and post nasal drip. I started to follow the below routine and so far it has worked for me:

    Mornings:

20 drops of grapefruit seed extract - diluted in water

2 capsules of grape seed extract (250 mg)

    1 capsule vitamin C (1000 mg)

    Afternoon:

    1 glass grapewater juice

    1 MSM capsule

    After lunch: Betaine HCL

    Evenings:

20 drops of grapefruit seed extract - diluted in water

2 capsules of grape seed extract (250 mg)

    1 capsule vitamin C (1000 mg)

During this time I never ate yoghurt, milk, bread never drank beer, wine. Basically because they are fermented and I am jewish anyway. We are taught to stay away from fermented food. I never drank coke.

Also, I put chinese balm in my nose before I went to bed and sometimes cleaned my nose with baby shampoo.

In 3 months I started to see that the thick mucus started to very slowly go away. But not very rapidly. Maybe I had seen 10 % - 15 % improvement.

I also started to have more active bowel. I was Xarting all the time and after I drank grapewater juice i had to poop.

Btw I have always had terrible breath, cough etc.

Now 2 years later, I can confidently say I improved % 80 but not 100 / 100. Bad breath, coughing etc all gone. Running nose is still with me but less active.

Some of you wrote stress triggered nasal drip. I think that stress weakens your immune system. That is why the bacteria get stronger when you are stressed. This is how I think.

I strongly believe this is a very strong bacteria. A doctor told me we get infected with bacteria everyday. They tested me for different kinds of bacteria but the results were inconclusive.

I lost almost 30 kgs in the past 3 years. I dont use all the supplements now. I get 20 drops of grapefruit seed extract and 1 grape seed extract that is it.

I hope these work for you.

hello, i only read a couple of the responses on here and that was enough for me. replying since your the original post. im literally crying right now. i have been dealing with these symptoms since 2017. My quality of life is zero. i have been telling my husband for at least 2 years that this whole ordeal makes me almost suicidal. i walk around all day spitting in a cup and belching (you can hear it pop through the mucus that is closing off my throat). this then traps air and cause bloating and excessive belching which relieves the bloating for a short time. some background....i got a septoplasty and a sinus drained in 2006. when i started having these symptoms in 2017 i went to an ent who sent me for a catscan and then to another ent who told me that the surgeon who sid my septoplasty removed to much cartilage which resulted in a saddle nose deformity. i was told that any surgery would be considered cosmetic and not covered by insurance and there was some other treatments we could try. i eventually quit with theedications because nothing worked. the mucus got worse with time so i went back to the doctor last year cause i couldnt take it anymore and i was sent to another ent who wanted me to go get another 400$ catscan and i couldnt help but feel like i was just going through the same bs again. as i was reading my charts i noticed that i was diagnosed with nasal valve collapse at the first ent. no doctor had mentioned this or explained this to me. im convinced all of these problems are due to structural issues after reading everyones replies. Its nice to know im not alone. has anyone had surgery and did insurance cover this? Thank you in advance.

    Hello all,

I too had been scouring the Internet for an answer to this problem that greatly affects my life every single day. I have a bad smell in my nose that also affects my taste. I have had it for about 4 years now. I saw many ENTs and had MRIs and CT scans. The bad smell is only in my left nostril. The conclusion for myself is that it is a neurological issue. If I invert my head, or put my head upside down, it puts pressure on my face/nose and it will make the smell go away for me. I usually lay on my bed face down and let my head hang down off the edge. I live with this affliction every day, but thankfully that trick has gotten me through. Blowing my nose will instantly trigger the smell for me. Laughing also is a trigger. I have found that cannabis also will take away the smell for me - I assume it calms the nerve(s) somehow. But I do not recommend that for a long-term solution. I hope my testimony helps anyone searching for relief. Look into neurological issues and you may find what you're looking for.
