20 Year Old with Hiatal Hernia, need advice and help please!

Hey Guys, my name is Chris and I'm 20. Last April after being given an endoscopy I was diagnosed with a 5cm sliding hiatal hernia. Since then I have developed severe anxiety and depression. As of late the anxiety has simmered out and I have been perfectly fine for around 2/3 months. It wasn't until yesterday that I had what I believed to have been an anxiety attack, this caused me to vomit. I had not eaten in a while and managed to bring up just stomach bile. Since then I have felt unwell and unable to eat. I don't know whether this is due to lack of food or my hernia but I cannot eat whatsoever. If anyone has experienced this I would love a bit of reassurance and some advice on what to do next because I really don't know. Thank you.

Sounds like it could possibly be the acid reflux coming up. Anxiety can make this all worse as well as the scariness of going trough it all can cause anxiety..I'm 24 and also have a Hiatial hernia I thought that I wasn't having reflux symptoms but I was it can range from pain to coughing to hoarseness to mucus in the throat. I'd suggest talking to your gp about it and seeing a gastro specialist as untreated reflux can be pretty bad (mines now reached my ear and is causing dizziness) I assume your on medication for it? If not you probably need to be this all happened to me when I went off my meds. Some mindfulness based therapy/counselling can also help especially if your having anxiety but talk to your gp about this to

Thanks for the reply Charmayne. I don't feel like it is because of yesterday's issues. I feel like my stomach may just be tender from all of the vomiting. I'm on Omeprazole for my acid reflux and haven't had any problems since starting. Ive been to so many Gastro specialists and I'm on all the medication I need! I want to believe that yesterday has caused this little fright and I'm just repairing but my head won't let me. I've been to counselling and it hasn't worked and as a student I haven't got the funds to go private. I'm on heavy meds for my anxiety which I've recently began taking again so I think I'll give it a couple more days and if there isn't any improvement i will go and see my GP. Thank you again.

Don't know if I can provide the advice that you need- but I can truly relate to the anxiety attacks/depression that you mentioned.   I had my hiatal hernia surgery back on December 22nd.   Was in the operating room for 5-1/2 hours-  two surgeons did the procedure.   Had to wear a tube for 4 weeks.   Since the tube was removed, I have had many bouts of vomiting.   Some days I can eat and other days not.   My stomach is so weark and I feel weak!    Doctor last tol me that he could give me some nitrogliceran tablets to put under my tongue, but nitro has bad side effects.   Brings on terrible headaches.   So, he said the best that I can do is to just wait this healing out.   Not a lot of fun, believe me.   Sometimes I feel as though I am at the "breaking point,."

Thanks for the reply and I'm sorry to here that so many of us are having complications! I think you are completely right when saying that I must wait to heal because I think all the bad thoughts are in my head and they're just exacerbating the symptoms! I'm sure in a few days maybe even a week I'll be okay! Thanks for the advice guys and I wish a speedy recovery for you Ruth.

I felt that a few months ago, just felt sick all the time and did not want to eat, would feel even worse when I would eat certain things, finally found it was a medication I was taking. I do have Gerd and 8.1 cm haital hernia and having surgery this month, it is causing me severe breathing problems.

Keep seeing doctors until they help you. I had to mention to doctors that I thought it was the h h causing my problem, finally after many different test my doctor referred me to a surgeon in Seattle whom has done many of these surgeries and if you should have this surgery, make sure he or she has done many of them.

    The best to you

    Warmly

    Jo
