20 years ago I Had 2 TMIs! Later having a psychotic episode! I have Had three Doctors over this period of time! Not one of them EVER said that there were anything other than the 20mg ! The Zombie I was ,I never questioned them! In Dec the Doc. Wanted to try me on a new med! But never gave me 10, 5 or 2.5 mg to help me detox! I Got so sick! At the same time feeling like, Where have I been??? I noticed I was more present for my beloved granddaughter! Long story short I wound up in Hospital in ICU for 3 days! At that point the Doctor told me that I might of only had one psychotic episode after my head injury! And in fact said he wondered what this med. Had done to my brain? So I went home and started asking my phone questions as well as just putting questions in the Google thing? I am vary low tech, But what I am reading is making me sick! Not to mention the fact that I am so physically ILL ! No one can even imagine how sick I am! I can not handle any stress, But every thing I eat runs right through me! And my neek and back are in unbearable pain! I have some paranoia ,and can not sleep! At this point I do not know what to do! I was able to get the Doctor to give me some Xanax and I do take it when I am in intensive shape! Is there anybody else who has been through this! Do you have any Idea What I can do? I Don't drink, Have never taken illegal drugs, and have never smoked a marijuana cigarette! I am now a vary fragile 62 year old! Is there any chance for me? Anything thing you can tell me would help!

Hi, I am so sorry you are so sick. I do not know if I can help you, but i recently came off olanzapine by gradual tapering.. Many of the side  affects are still with me such as constant hunger and feeling like a zombie. I have been given gabapentin to help me sleep. I would also suggest you see  a phychaiatrist because they specialize in medications.. You may not need any more medications just diet and exercise to help. I am sure you are not at the end with no help you just need to find the right doctor who can help you decide what is best for you at this time. Hang in there and get well soon.

Hi Nancy, my mother was put on Zyprexa to “control “ her psychosis. It is contraindicated for elderly patients, however after reading the experiences from others here, it seems it should not be prescribed EVER, to ANYONE! It nearly killed my mother, and left her severely disabled, and no one is accountable for this. My mother’s experience with this drug is fairly typical from what I’ve read. She experienced diabetic ketoacidodis and was diagnosed with typeI diabetes, had a carduac arrest while in the hispitals and also mild strokes, as she is right handed and her right hand was weaker than her left after everything. Looking at her journal, it appeared she’d been having mini strokes about once a month, leading up to the cardiac arrest and diabetes. She was in assited living with all of this going on. I feel the care system in the US is criminally negligent, as virtually all of my mother’s health problems were caused by lack of treatment, incorrect treatment, as well as side effects from drugs.

Here’s the thing, one my mother was do bad, there was no hope for her and she was placed in hospice. On hospice, I was able to wean her off all her drugs. Amazingly her health improved! The hospice nurses told me this was pretty typical- many people recover from their deathbed “illnesses” when they quit their meds.

I put together a plan of herbs and supplements along with  a stellar dietary plan, natural treatments including massage, chiropractic and acupuncture treatments. She’s doing incredibly well and the only medication she now takes is an OTC thyroid replacement  along with her many herbs and supplements.

While the holistic treatment has been crucial, my mother has suffered most of her life from hypothyroid disease, which was never properly treated. Since I myself also deal with hypothyroid disease and have tried and failed with many prescription meds , I was able to help my mother by getting her on (alternative) thyroid replacement that actually works for her. Since she has been in my care, for two years, she has not had any evidence of psychosis other than the typical confusion that accompanies dementia- a far cry from psychosis!

I suspect her decades of depression, mania, psychosis,  anxiety and paranoia were caused by severe hypothyroid disease. I am the daughter of a “mentally ill” parent. Getting thyroid treatment changed my relationship with my mother in a way I never expected!

You have alternatives and a world of information literally at your fingertips. Get to work and take back your power and find something that works for you!

If you'd like to send me a private message, I’d be happy to share some of the details of things that helped my mother.

Thank you so much for your input! At this point I am so sick that I can see why people just start taking this garbage again! I am exercising some but now have a new symptom, there is a pain under my left side under my ribs? Since I just got out of the hospital! Which I absolutely hate! I am trying to just ignore it anyway anything you can think of that might help! Is much appreciated! How long do you think it will take to be detoxed from this garbage?

      Hi Mtc

I haven't been on the forum for a few years but am on today as I have been taking a low dose 2.5mg of Olanzapine for 13 years but have noticed some strange hand and feet movements so thinking I might try again a slow reduction off.  I would love to hear about any natural aids.  Last time I tried to some off 3 years ago I reduced by cutting my meds every 2 months or so and got down to .675 mgs but had a euphoric episode that freaked me out a bit.  I wonder now if my brain can function without the olanzapine. But wonder if there is something natural that can replace it or help with reduction.  Thank you for your time.  Cheers Marbel
