22cm Ovarian Cyst needs removedwhen pregnant

I am 12 weeks preganant and discovered a 22cm cyst.  I have been advised it needs to be removed but laparoscopic surgery isnt an option due to the size of the cyst.  I have to have full surgery.  Has anyone else had this surgery whilst pregnant and the baby was ok??  They are hoping to wait a few weeks before surgery.  I am also afraid of ovary removal etc but due to size of cyst it looks likely.  Anyone had a similar experience?

    Hi Janine 1234,

Dont know if this will help you, but i also had a 22cm ovarian cyst, I had it removed in May this year, I was not pregnant but I have been trying to conceive for some time, my surgeon managed to do my surgery keyhole, unfortunately I did have too have my right ovary and fallopian tube removed, I am now going to need fertility help as been advised too remove my other ovary as it can happen again in time apparently and I didn't get great pathology results back.

I can't imagine how hard it is with you being pregnant, I would think doing your surgery laparoscopic would be dangerous too baby as they need too blow up your stomach with air and then use rods and cameras this is through the belly button and also 3 other cuts in the tummy. I know you will be nervous but my doc keeps telling me they know what they are doing, try trust them. Sorry you are going through this I know how scary it is x

Thanks for getting back to me hearing people's experiences can be reassuring. Yes mine won't be keyhole surgery which will result in longer recovery but it's babies safety is my concern. Also in terms of you conceiving I hope all works out for you. It's a very abxious time for me and I just hope that it all goes well. Just quick question how were you after your surgery had you much pain? The recovery scares me also.

    Hi ,

The pain wasn't too bad but I was just relieved to get my cyst out as it made me so uncomfortable I couldn't eat or breath as it was crushing the other organs, there is alot swelling but I imagine your recovery will be different from mine, make sure you are able too get lots and lots of rest and that there is someone there too help you as you will be tender.

I know it's easier said than done but try not stress yourself out, I myself worried myself sick, looking back I wish I'd spoke too someone, that's why I replied too you, there isn't alot of people who get a 22cm cyst, it's a frightening time.

Just ask any time, if you have any questions or worries.

Yes I'm so anxious for how the baby will cope and the thought of misscarrying.

The pain of the operation is hard to imagine too I am afraid it will be sore and how I will manage. Was it painful for you in the immediate days after the operation?? Did you require staples or dissolvable stitches?
