24/7 numb burning prickly toes

I've now had this feeling in my toes for 4+ years, it started in the toes in my right foot but has now spread to my left and I have a similar feeling in one of my fingers under my fingernail but don't know if they two are related. I'm a 26 year old male. My toes on both feet feel numb and prickly constantly 24/7 it feels like they are permanently damaged! The feeling doesn't come and go it's there 24/7 there isn't a day that goes by when I don't feel it.

I've been to the podiatrist and had X-rays done but they found nothing wrong. I also got special insoles to walk on but these don't do anything the pain and discomfort persists. It's not compression from footwear either because I always wear shoes that have a little bit of room.

Then I thought it could be due to my being overweight/obese and several years of eating junk food and not exercising at all. But recently I've lost weight and done a lot of exercise including a lot more walking and the pain seems to be gradually getting worse. It's really gotten me to the point where I feel so low and can't do much but stay at home.

My podiatrist refuses to refer me to get injections done because I could be waiting 18 months and in his words "everyone has a little numbness in their feet" even after explaining my pain and discomfort. I'm thinking of going private and getting maybe steriod injections or something else to stop the pain but don't know how to go about this. I've never used private healthcare before. I live in Northern Ireland.

Has anyone experienced/currently experiencing this type of pain? How did you fix it?

Any advice would be appreciated!

yes I did have it. As you describe it. I was prescribed hydroxychloroquine and it has taken pain away thank god. I get it because I have an auto immune disorder.

Hi Margaret thank you so much for replying. Do you still have or did you ever have any numbness even though you don't have pain? Were you prescribed hydroxychloroquine through your GP or a podiatrist? My GP is reluctant to prescribe me anything he just referred me to a podiatrist. Thanks again.

hi yes I have had numbness with and without pain. I am sorry to say I found the podiatrist very nice and sympathetic and all of that but ultimately quite useless.

I see a specialist for an auto immune disorder. He was the one who prescribed for me. I honestly think you should ask for a referral to a rheumatologist if you are suffering on and on like that. I appreciate how uncomfortable you are. I have had this for years and ended up with bursitis in my feet and had a couple of falls my feet were so bad.

    Hi,

have you been to a physio and had a neuro test to make sure there isn't a compressed nerve in your back? I had numbness in my toes and an L5 restriction was causing it. Once they did some release work it eased up.

I also have some altered temperature sensations in my right foot, which is a side effect of a medication I am on. If you take any regular medication, check if neuropathy is a side effect.
