24 with kidney disease.. stage 3 Dont understand why

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have just been diagnosed and I am very depressed.. (Big surprise right?)

I am only 24 and never saw it coming.

I am 6 foot 150 lbs no diabetes no high blood pressure

I never saw it coming - I am stage 3 with a little more then normal protein leaking.. It doesn't make sense to me.. My doctor won't give me any answers he just reads results and does not know why my kidneys are at stage 3. I got normal on all of my test results other than the creatine and protein in urine (which makes it a stage 3 from the #s)

My kidneys sometimes hurt and my urine is frequently foamy.

My diet is very healthy and I do not eat much protein.. Why is this happening? How long do I have to live..i'd like an honest answer I know it varries but..

Hey Joe, how many tests have you had, just 1 or has it been over time (i.e. a few and it has not improved over time). If it's only 1 test or shorter than a month it could be a kidney infection. As for how long you have left, ages mate! They'll obviously monitor you if it doesn't improve, then if they can't do the job (clearing all the toxins & stuff) then there's dialysis that does it for you. You sound healthy enough from other bits you posted. My kidneys are CKD 4 (15% ish) and I'm not on dialysis yet. I have been in the past but that was when infections pushed me under the safety mark (my kidneys shut down during a liver transplant 2 yrs ago.

don't need to worry about your will for some time yet!

    good luck.

    Hi,

Sorry to hear your news don't be sad I was diagnosed at 13 i am now 37 and still going (Matts been through the mill too and he is still here!).  It will be a long time these days before you go anywhere as Matt says, kidney disease isn't like it used to be.  There is lots to be done now you just need to listen to what you are told to do (ask questions though, thats important that you understand whats happing to you and if your GP wont tell you contact one of the kidney charities) the main thing they do in the early days is keep an eye on your blood pressure, this has to be kept in good order as kidneys don't like high blood pressure.  I have end stage renal failure and have just started dialysis and its not so bad and I hope to have my friends kidney after christmas so you see theres loads that can be done and just because you are stage 3 doesn't mean you will get any worse you may stay at this indeffinately (everyone dies). let us know how you get on

Hi Joe,  I know being told you have something wrong can be frightening but really the name of the disease is a bit deceptive. I was diagnosed in my early thirties,I'm nearly fifty and mine hadn't hasn't got any worse and may never do. If your GP isn't giving you answers get a second opinion.  Ask what your Gfr is as this is what determines the level of CKD you have.  Lots of people have lots of different symptoms. The only thing I have is high blood pressure and the occasional infection.

You need to talk to your GP as it sounds as all they are doing is frightening you.

Joe, as the others have said Stage3 kidney disease is not something to immediately panic about

My friend's doctor told her that the Government had opened a can of worms in declaring that the eGFR test should be carried out as a matter of routine;  also a specialist told me that CKD was a very unfortunate name for the condition, but it was devised by America and we have to live with it.

GPs are generally advised that they don't need to refer anyone with CKD at Stage 3 or above.  However, personally (and I'm not a medic) if I was just 24 years old and had protein in my urine, I would definitely be asking for referral to a renal consultant if only for peace of mind.   So be strong and ASK - it is your body and your GP is being paid to care for you.  If you don't get anywhere, then see a different GP in the practice.

Importantly do try not to worry, and do come back and let us know how you get on.

Thanks guys for the support - yes I have had many tests done / repeated.. They all came back normal except for the creatine levels and protein in urine.

My creatine level was about 45

My urine level was about 40 for protein

I feel lost because the doctor im seeing just reads me results which I could do on my own and I feel like its just going to an office to get more depressed.

He offers no guidance or answers I will follow your advise and see a new renal doctor. I have no diabetes and no high blood pressure and no lupus etc.. litterally every other test came back normal (mamogram etc..no diseases like lupus..)
