26 yo male with strange chest pain

I am a 26yo male. Normal weight, non-smoker, I only drink a beer/week. I follow a balanced diet, no sodas, cokes, takeaways etc... I also go running but not (less than 10 km/week). I used to be a little overweight and I was in a diet+exercise regime for the last 6 months, and I saw some very good results. My body weight has gone from over 85 to around 70 (which is normal for a 1.74m male) and I also managed to build some muscle through weight training (no anabolics/proteins/supplements or anything).

The last 2 weeks however I have developed some strange syptoms.

I have a persistant chest pain mainly in the upper right part of my chest, but some times I also feel it on the left and on the upper sternum. The pain itself is not much, I would describe it more as a dull ache (pain level 1-2/10). That means that I can generally feel it, but it's not strong enough to be considered debilitating, only slightly discomforting. Some days I may feel a very slight discomfort swallowing but this is probably psychological. I have no cough or anything like this.

The pain is generally is non-existant in the morning and progressively gets worse through the day (never exceeding 2/10). It does not increase with aerobic exercise, and it decreases after I do a couple of pull-ups or push-ups. I cannot locate any point in my chest muscles that feels painful to the touch or pressing. I also don't have any fever/sweating etc. I have stopped doing weight training and running for the last 2 weeks but the pain is more or less unchanged. Due to my being a student my averege day includes much sitting in front of a PC.

I weigh myself daily (a habit I got during my recent diet) and I generally eat what I want now (avg. 2100-2200 kcals per day) just not huge portions and no takeaways/cokes etc... When I stopped "dieting" my weight was around 71kg. Today (1 month after the diet stop and 2 weeks without any cardio) it was around 68.5kg. I don't know what to make of the recent weight loss... maybe it's normal.

I've had an ECG done 5 years ago and it didn't show any heart defects. My blood tests (earlier this year) were also in the normal ranges. Last time I had a chest X-ray was around 3 years ago but it was clean. We don't have any serious disease history in my family, exept my grandfather that died of lung cancer 20years ago, but he was a very heavy smoker for all his life...

I have been reading the internet the last 2 weeks and as you imagine, I am convinced I have at least 1000 different kinds of terminal diseases :P

I would like however to visit a doctor if the pain persists and maybe have some tests done just in case. What doctor specialty would you recomend with such symptoms?

Hi. One cause could be posture, sitting at the comp. The weight loss is probably normal as you are eating sensibly now. I would get an x-ray to clear up any worries you have, Good luck and stop imagining dire diseases -

I have exactly similar condition as described by you, constant pain in right upper side of chest . Its not as terrible but quite discomforting. Have scheduled an appointment with doctor but am bit scared having browsed thru the internet. I have also been a smoker fpr 8-10 yrs. From whatever I browsed thru internet, i found few stuff which resembles our problem...

pulmonary embolism(blood clot in lungs) , costochondritis , pinched nerve , pleuracy and finally pancoast tumor. I just hope its not pancoast for me as I dont have any other symptoms like cough or shortness of breath or Horner syndrome. Just keeping my fingers crossed but honestly I feel its something serious.

Yes, I found the same stuff on the net, but I think that if it was cancer or anything like that there would be other symptoms as well. I wish you best of luck!
