2nd hip replacement surgery

Has anyone had a successful total hip replacement only to start having problems with the other hip? I'm 2 months post-op and my other hip is suddenly very painful. Is it common to end up having both hips replaced?

Don't let it get that bad, a friend who was in bad pain was told it was'nt bad enough went back again and got a referral and has recently had a total hip replacement.

Apparently one in four people who have one done have the other done. Definitely get it checked.  Initially one doctor told me I’d need both doing in a relatively short space of time but I seem to have been given a reprieve as X-rays show no further deterioration. However if I get pain (important to make sure it’s hip pain and not back/pelvic/tendon) then I will hot foot it back for assessment. Waited way too long to get number 1 done

Yes..I'm 4 months post op...I guess around 2 months I started to feel pain in my other hip..just had my 4 month post op appt..I told them I wanted to hold off for a while..X-rays showed arthritis but not as bad as my left hip was before it was replaced.. sort of disappointed, but what are you gonna do? Such is life..in thankful for modern medicine

Hi, I am 7 weeks post right hip replacement and now my left hip is giving me lots of groin pain. Went to see my surgeon this week and he advised that this should settle down once I even out my weight bearing. Hoping this happens! My right hip was far worse than the left so I'll probably end up having that one done also eventually if it deteriorates but I'm hoping not for a few years yet.

Hope it resolves itself for you.

Unfortunately yes.... I’m 50. First may 2017. Pain started in left a couple of months later and had that replaced may 2018.  I have to say that I am in more pain now because of all the muscle weakness and muscle lain in my back and neck. Don’t know what’s worse... hip pain or all over pain. Sorry for the negative answer hun...... don’t know how to advise you

If I could turn the clock back I don’t know if I would have started with either ... but then that’s not a good choice either.

    Good luck xxx

Hi Mumanater, while my left hip was resevted, I could not bear weight on that hip for 6_8 weeks. This meant that my other hip and my back took most of my weight. The right hip had to be also replaced but I had 2 bad hips to start with. If you can make it to the pool and do movement enhancement classes, it might help strengthen the muscles and delay having to have the second hip replaced. It is a lot of weight shifting and adjustement and it does take about 6 months for things to go back to normal. Best of luck.

They do say hips go in twos although that is not inevitable. My other hip is a bit painful now, although when I had the X-ray after my hip op the guy did say my other hip looked a bit rough.

    Hi Mum,

i had a TRHR last summer in June. The weird thing is, that initially my left hip was the one that gave  me problems. But the pain on the right side ended up superceeding the left side. According to the X-rays they said my right hip was worse so that’s the one I had replaced. I knew I’d probably need the left one replaced too and as it turned out there was considerable deterioration between this past November and May. My theory is that during the healing of the right hip the left one was taking the brunt of the work. Just had a TLHR 5 weeks ago.  So to answer your question, I think if you have arthritis as I do, it’s not unusual to have it in both hips possibly leading to both needing to be replaced.

    I hop you feel better.

I had my left one done J an 2016 and was told I would have problems if I had the right one done too soon as it's common to need them both doing. I went back to my go in the September and he refferred me back to the the surgeon who then agreed to do it. I had the right one done J an 2017 it took about 12 months to feel the benefit. I can honestly say it was the best thing I ever did I forget I have to artificial hips sometimes. No pain! I am 57 now and loving my life having suffered pain since my thirties and being told I was too young xx
