3 1/2 months post left THR, knee still swollen and painful

Posted , 2 users are following.

I had quite a traumatic operation back in September, made harder by 2 previous childhood surgeries for congenital hip issues.

Following my recent surgery I had quite severe swelling through my entire left leg and extensive bruising.

My knee is still really swollen and my leg can feel heavy.

I'm wondering if anybody else has experience this still at 3.5 months, if there is still hope it may go.

Icing and elevating doesn't make much difference.

Thanks, Lizzy

    Hi lizzy,

very sorry to hear your going thru a tough time. THR surgery can be very painful , exhausting at times and it seems like it never ends. it is major surgery and many doctors are not prescribing compression socks on op leg which has been a prevention tool with controlling leg swelling. have had three THR surgeries. have you talked to your surgeon about your concerns?

there are limb compression devices online battery operated that squeeze the leg and thigh to help with pain of swelling. really helps a great deal by relieving pressure and pain, ordered it online. walking helps as much as possible daily, don't over do, thru time you will get better until no aides are needed. short term recovery 3 months long term 8 months to a year. your going thru the most difficult time of adjustments. I totally get it when the op leg is so swollen , knee, foot. it took mine months to calm down. the compression device is a plastic thigh and calf sock with tubes attached to a battery which squeezes the thigh and calf area gently with air. easy to apply , repeat as often as needed ....reasonably priced too..it greatly lessoned the pain from the swelling.

keep me posted on your recovery.
