3 days post rectocele and perineal repair

Hi there,

I have never posted on a forum like this before but am interested in hearing about other people's experiences, as recovery can be a lonely process once you're back home and trying to cope with day to day life.

I am only 3 days post op, so I know it is very early days but the biggest things I am struggling with is having a bowel movement. Since yesterday I have been feeling the urge to go, I sit in the recommended position, knees higher than hips, leaning forward and breathe and also hold on to my stitches but I just can't pass anything. I don't want to push too hard and bust open my stitches, besides which the pain is something else, so I give and go and lie down to take the pressure off.

I am taking lactulose and sennakot and have been eating mostly just fruit and soup. Although I taking pain relief which I know can cause constipation

I just oust wondered if anyone out there has experienced this and how long will it take before I able to do a poo? Is there anything else I could be doing?

Thanks xx

    Hi linz40,

I had my operation last Thursday, and was taking 2 sachets of movicol twice a day until Sunday morning, when I went to the loo. I was also eating soup, and fruit. After that I have been too regular so reduced the movicol to one sachet a day and see how things go. Have you managed to go yet? How are y8u copying with sitting with the stitches? Hope all is well x

      Hi Doolou,

After that first bowel movement things improved, although all the laxative meds I'd taken did mean I spent the next two days on the loo, so I stopped taking them and just managed with diet, prune juice and plenty of water.

Sitting with the stitches is getting easier but when sat down have tended to sit in a reclined position with my feet up.

That first week was hard but it has got a lot easier since. Hope you feeling better soon. x

      Hi Linz,

I do think things are getting easier thank you, sounds like they are for you too. I'm definitely feeling better, because I'm getting fidgety! Lol. Just hoping that I'm not starting with an infection! Will see how things go though. Thank you for your reply x
