3 Monofocal questions

Posted , 8 users are following.

  1. If I had a monofocal implanted for best distance, what is the average patient experience for vision before it gets blurry/isn't crisp? 2 meters out? 1 meter?

  2. Would an Eyehance set to best distance have a noteworthy contrast loss compared to a Clareon monofocal?

  3. If a Vivty was set to -.5D in the non dominant and and either a Clareon monofocal or Eyehance was set in the dominant eye for best distance, I assume a fair amount of my vision would have a good binocular summing effect and depth perception for distance. I'm curious how the intermediate to near would be with this combination.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This might not help you much but could be on interest. I asked for -050 in RE and -01.25 in LE getting the Tecnis 1 monofocal. I got possibly -01.00 in RE giving me about 6 to 8 ft. of super clear distance in the RE and down to about 18 inches. My LE is at -01.75 and has very bad distance BUT I can still drive without glasses! Since I have mini-monovision I find the two eyes coordinate with the RE dominating for distance vision. Having great distance to me is not as important as good close and intermediate vision as I live in a world where I use that a lot. I am not in my car that much and because the signs are so large I can see essentially everything! I can even see street signs as long as they are not super far away.

As I'm deciding on mini-monovision targets with the Eyhance monofocal "plus", I'd appreciate more detail regarding your "good close and intermediate vision". What are the closest distances at which you have good vision in bright and less bright conditions, and what do you mean qualitatively and/or quantitatively by "good"? Looking at Eyhance defocus curves, a combination of -1.00 D and -1.75D shows, on average, mean visual acuities in the better eye of, at distance, 0.201 logMAR, 20/32 Snellen (which clearly makes for legal driving without glasses); at 66.67 cm / 26.25", 0.044 logMAR, 20/22 Snellen; at 36.36 cm / 14.31", 0.103 logMAR, 20/25 Snellen; and at 30.77 cm, 12.11", 0.185 logMAR, 20/31 Snellen.

      .

      TIA

Unfortunately, I don't get that detailed. I just got back from the 6 wk Optometrist appt. and she said I now have 20/25 but they expected 20/40. I have LE -01.5 and RE-01.00 with -0.50 astigmatism in the LE removed and -0.50 removed in the RE. Generally I see more clearly everything when I remove my sunglasses in brighter light. I have AMD so brighter light is always better and sunglasses can make it slightly more difficult. I have excellent computer, reading, walking vision as my LE is good for closer in vision. I have very clear vision from 6 to 8 feet as both eyes are coordinating with the RE at -01.00. Past 8 feet it can get more blurry, however, but I can still larger print. Driving is not a problem without glasses as signs are so big. It is rare that I can't make out one with smaller print. That is all I can tell you. My Cyl. reading now is LE -01.50 and RE -01.00. All in all I am pretty happy with the results. Not wearing glasses is something I prefer which is what I am doing now as before with my natural eyes with cataracts and more astigmatism and refraction issues.

The Spherical Equivalent or SE (sphere plus 50% of cylinder) of those results would be as follows:

      .

      RE: -1.5 D

      LE: -2.25 D

      .

I recall that is in the range of what you originally wanted, so that is good. If you are at 20/25 I would expect you could get the restrictions on your driving license lifted.

The Optometrist said I probably will get the night driving restriction lifted. Happy about that!
