3 months from bilateral hip replacement but having a lot of pain

Hi All

I am new here but reading all the questions and answers it seems a very good site.  I am 3 months from bilateral hip replacement and am still getting around indoor and out with a stick but I have a lot of pain in my back which goes down one leg and also where the hips were put in it seems to be pulling and my legs still feel very 'heavy' when I walk.  I have had a lot of operations omy back having discs fused due to osteoporosis but wondered if anybody else was like this.  Oh and my hips are still very swollen and I cannot get some of my clothes to fit me.  I know for the first 6 weeks I rely just sat in the chair and ate and didn'tdo any exercise so of course I put weight on like that and its so depressing.  I am trying to lose weight but its hard.  Anybody else got the swelling on the hips and the pulling when you walk.I thought at 3 months I would be a lot better than I am.  Thanks guys!

Hi Brenda. I have slight swelling over the incision but not really anything else . Walking does help with the swelling if you have any andalthough it may be painful your exercises will help reduce swelling. If you need to take pain killers to enable you to do them then don't be afraid to.

Hello it has been almost eight weeks on my right hip I still do have swelling but I apply ice n walk n exercise so I don't get stiff n achy. I only take advil came off other meds, but we are all different so if you need meds to do exervise then don't be afraid to. Good luck. It takes time.😊

Hi Brenda. I am 7 months post left THR and I have been getting back pains since before my hip was replaced. Like you the back pain goes down my left leg as well and is unbearable at times my doctor sent me for an MRI and it came back that I have a few slipped discs which cause sciatic and facet joint arthritis in the lower back. I don't have any swelling though. Maybe you should try to find out if you have sciatica also.

      Dear Julie

I only had about 10 minutes with the Registrar and all he said was 'are you seeing anybody about your back'.  Problem is that I have osteoarthritus and osteoporosis and I have had both knees replaced, so many operations on my back to fuse discs and then rods put in, and I have had my sacroilliac joint fused.  Oh and the left knee doesn't bend much at all, never did but the surgeon wouldn't hear anything about if so I suppose I have everything against me.  I just feel I was doing well early on but now I am walking with one stick everything seems so much harder, specially to lose the weight I have put on!!  Has anybody else still got swollen hips at 3 months?

    dear brenda,

warm welcome to this hippies forum where personal experiences and stories are shared ... you found us !!! we come in all ages and stages from all over the world -

first question:  have you seen your ortho-surgeon aboout this ? were x-rays taken and what was the outcome ?

You mention that you had lot of operations on your back and this might be the reason that your recovery might take a bit longer ... I had no back surgeries and my recovery seems to be slower than others - I had 2 THR surgeries within 6 months - bilateral might even be more challenging in the beginning ..

swelling of hips are quite normal - try not to worry about that too much ...

also, we all heal differently and have high expectations - some of us heal faster and have no issues and others might take a bit longer - it is said that it can take up to 12-18 months for healing to be complete --- they just to tell us before surgery - well, my surgeon did and I did not believe him ...

please let us know how you are getting on otherwise, okay and come here any time when you have questions or concerns -

    you are not alone !!!

    big warm hug

      Dear Renee

I had my check up last year and no x-ray was taken, the the Consultants Registrar just looked at the x-ray that was taken  a couple of days after I had my hips done I didn't have a new x-ray done.  I know that the problems in my back are hurting and although I was getting on well I seem to have gone back and I am not so good.  My hips are still very swollen although I massage but I have not heard or read that anybody's hips are still very swollen.  Also I am having a lot of trouble getting the weight off that I put on just after surgery when I just ate and did no exercise so couldn't burn any calories off??  Thanks all.  Hugs to anybody having problems. x

      hi brenda,

to be honest here, the shape of my body has changed so much after 2 THR surgeries - I also have gained a lot of weight and not able to get it off .. not one ounce ... not only post surgery but also prior to the weight has come on ... we can only do our best, darling - no need to be so hard on your self, okay ...

      angel blessings

      all is well
