3 weeks after my first THR... thigh still tight

Doing the exercises as recommended generally ok, but lifting my thigh from a standing position on the operated leg is still a great problem. Certainly not 90 degrees yet. Is that normal?

Thanks

    ric22112,

You are only three weeks post op, you have a lot of healing to do yet. If you had clips, they have only been removed a week ago, because the scar is closed the inside has a lot of healing going on. You will get more movement as the weeks go by, after four weeks you should start moving a lot better, three months you should feel pretty normal. Just keep exercising and lots of walking.

Thanks Jen. I hope so. I have steristrips which the nurse said would drop away over a few more weeks. So not the expected stitch or staple removal to go through.

Hi, Think you will find the leg lifts get easier around 4 to 5 weeks. I do mine against a windowsill with a radiator that is beneath, I use the radiator height as a guide to progress, it will get easier, I used the same method with my first thr, so I know it works for me. I also had no clips or staples, just internal stitches that dissolve and glue, that helps a lot I think. Keep up with the lifts, you will get there. I struggle with the side raises whilst lying but am gritting my teeth and bearing it!!

I should of also asked, and of course everyone is different, but i was wondering what angle i should be hoping that my hip should lift to?

I am reasonably fit and with a bmi or 25.

Do you mean how far you will be able to lift your knee? Depends how flexible you were beforehand, I can lift my knee to chest whilst lying on my back for my first replacement, bit of a way to go still with this one. Some folk struggle with shoe laces, some don't appear to, push yourself but if it hurts, stop!!

Yes how far can i lift my knee. Not flexible before because of the dodgy hip.

I am 8.5 months out from THR with anterior approach and my thigh, mostly front, is still achy. I wasn't given exercises to do. Just walking. I have taken up bike riding to strengthen the thigh muscles. My ROM is pretty good.
