3 weeks after THR I’ve developed bad low back pain on side of new hip

My hip seemed to be recovering reasonably well but at 3 weeks I woke up with low back pain that knocked me for a loop. Getting out of bed in am to use toilet was agony. Had second physical therapy session the same morning and many of the exercises were undoable. Therapist did massage then cold pack but nothing really helped. I came home and cried. I’m already depressed about my limited activity, about not being able to easily pick things up, put on my pants, and most importantly not having a night’s sleep since I came home from hosp. Don’t know if call to surgeon is warranted. What exercises might I need to do?

I'm so sorry you are experiencing pain..you are so early on..does it hurt to stand on your leg? Can you walk? What did therapist say? I've had lower back pain..was my SI joint..but I remember about 2 or 3 weeks I needed to stretch..I laid on my back and therapist stretch one leg at a time..put one leg up and she stretched it out stretching my inner thighs and up.stretching my hamstring...I had the anterior lateral approach..at 3 weeks my Dr told me I had no restriction..but I was still cautious..I still am at 3 and half months..but I do stretch..my muscles are always so tight..before surgery they were like that too.

Connie and Pam thanks for your words of encouragement. I had been walking well with my cane, taking few pain meds. It’s scary to take oxycodone so I’ve been super cautious about taking it. Really just at bedtime and 2 extra strength Tylenol during day. I’m using heating pad and cold pad but nothing helps. Called Dr today, he’s seeing me in a couple of days. I hope he can offer me some relief. Thank you again ladies. I’m feeling sorry for myself and I don’t want to overburden my kids with my complaints so this forum is a lifesaver.

Hi Cecelia, I’m pleased that you have an appointment to see your doctor. Like many others, I slept really badly, and usually woke up with pain and stiffness in my back, but usually once I got going in the morning, the pain subsided. It sounds as though your pain is much worse. You said that you were being cautious about taking your meds. Maybe you should increase them in the short term? You don’t want to be in pain.

I wish you all the best.

I'd have thought a decent physio would have referred you if you are in that much pain.

You shouldn't be in pain, pain is NOT helpful,I would see your GP or contact your surgeon.
