3 weeks post op TAH

Yesterday I got out of bed and fresh blood ran from me like I was peeing.

I had spots for the first couple of days then nothing. 2 weeks post op & I had fresh blood when I wiped myself. Then came the shock yesterday morning. I feel blessed in regards to pain was taking the tramadol etc for 1 week and apart from the odd paracetamol nothing since.

I am experiencing restlessness a lot at night though it started in my vagina and legs but more recently is in my arms too. I'm sure this is all part of the healing process but if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.

I'm debating going for a short drive obviously not in rush hour traffic, has anyone else been driving at 3 weeks post op. I don't feel anymore tired than previously as I have autoimmune disorders which give me fatigue anyway. Looking forward to hearing from anyone with any suggestions / info.

Hi, thank you for your reply.

I have been intouch with the doctor.

Apparently it's possible because I've not been very active I had a collection build up and that was what came away yesterday.

I'm ok to drive as long as I feel well enough to make an emergency stop. Basically have been advised to watch & wait. I feel absolutely fine in myself and I to too had keyhole surgsurgery. All the best x

I had vaginal hysterectomy and was driving short distances at 2 weeks, check with your car insurance company to see if they will cover you, 're. The bleeding I had heard that this can happen at 2-3 weeks, obviously if it continues get yourself checked again. Good luck.

      Hi Phoebe

Just been surfing round forums to find out about other women's experiences re vaginal hysterectomy. Your comment about bleeding at 2/3 weeks is reassuring.  I had very little blood loss immediately post op and for the following few days and it's really a shock to wake up to find an increased loss of fresh blood.  I'm interested to hear if anyone has found certain things seem to impact more on blood loss.  The only activity they warn you against is lifting and I have avoided doing that but wonder if there is anything else that others have found impacts on blood loss e.g recommended sleeping position - sleeping on your back as opposed to on your side etc?

Hi, I have been very lucky in as much as I have had absolutely no bleeding at all, think my surgeon waved a magic wand instead of using a scalpel lol, if you bleed at 2-3 weeks it is normally pooled blood, blood that has been sitting there and suddenly escapes, it could also be that internal stitches are beginning to come away, as I said previously if this bleeding goes on for any length of time you need to go to the docs also if you get any clots come away this is not normal and needs to be looked at. It can happen literally if you just stand up from sitting so not always down to what you have been doing. I was told all of this before I had my op.

If you are in any way worried PLEASE PLEASE always see your doc.

    Hi Chaddie

Just read your post - hope you are feeling OK.  I am 2 weeks post op and had virtually no bleeding when I was discharged from hospital or for the following week.  Three days ago I awoke and went to the loo to see that I had had significant blood loss in the night. It has eased off a little over the past two days but still more than I would have expected to see considering how little I bled at the outset.  I have been really careful re not lifting anything but I'm wondering whether I am being too active too early.  I am going for short walks most days and then resting pm/evening. There seems to be a distinct lack of info re other things you shouldn't do.  I do tend to curl up when sleeping and wonder if this is a bad position.  I did have a chill-out day when I did virtually nothing and sat with my feet up but this did not reduce the blood loss - in fact I had less blood loss yesterday when I went out walking.  Anyone else out there finding the same?

    Hi Chaddie

Hope your recovery is going well.  Thought I'd just post some details of my progress to see if anyone else is experiencing similar problems. I am 2 weeks post op now.

My blood loss has been intermittent and just when I think it is finally slowing I discover another bleed when I go to the loo.

On Thursday I did rather overdo the walking but it was just ambling and not marching.  I felt paricularly well that day and wanted some fresh air. For the remainder of the day my blood loss was minimal so I was not unduly worried.

On Friday morning it was still minimal but I rested without doing much.  I then discovered at around 2pm when going to the loo that I suffered significant bleeding and made an emergency Dr's appointment.  He examined me and said that he was not able to see much although the bleeding was more than he expected to see at 2 weeks post op but did not seem too concerned.  He did speak to a gynae Dr at the local hospital who offered to see me if I went in to A & E.  By then the bleeding had eased off and the thought of a long journey at rush hour and the possible wait for probably 4 hours to see someone was not something I relished - I also did not want to be poked around again as I don't think they would have been able to see anything either and would no doubt just sent me home to rest.

On Sat morning there was almost no blood at all and this continued right through until the afternoon when it started again but not as bad as previously.  I did venture out in the evening with my partner for a Valentine's meal and felt fine. The blood loss was at a constant level but not as bad as before.

This morning I am staying in bed to see if this makes any difference.  The thing that is really frustrating me is that in general I have less blood loss when I am pottering around the house than I do when I am resting.  So knowing what to do for the best is really confusing.

    Anyone else finding this?  :-(

      Hi Denise

Thanks for your reassurance.  I have found this forum most helpful.  The Dr I saw on Friday was not my own Dr as I am recouperating with my partner some distance from home.  This Dr actually said to me after examining me 'well what would you like me to do about it?' Unbelievable!  All I want is reassurance that my situation is not unusual.  Because I had very little bleeding after the op and in the following few days I didn't expect to feel I was going backwards.  As long as it is normal I will treat each day as it comes and if I end up bleeding for the whole 6 weeks then so be it.  Everyone on this site is really supportive and helpful.  Thanks.

I have just copied this from the NHS choices website

After a hysterectomy, you will experience some vaginal bleeding and discharge. This will be less discharge than during a period, but it may last up to six weeks.

Visit your GP if you experience heavy vaginal bleeding, start passing blood clots, or have an offensive-smelling discharge.

There is also another really helpful website called Hysterectomy Association.

Hello chaddie, I blee. 3 weeks after op. I had pooled blood but also an internal bleed, plus an infection.

I ended up back in hospital for 3 days, there was also a possibility of another op, narrowly avoided, as they had to stitch me whilst awake not pleasant. I was told any bleeding is not good and if it's red then it's wrong.

i spoke to my doctor. Then phoned 111. My doctors were rubbish just told me to go A&E which I didn't want to do, but ended up doing after speaking to 111.

the gynae doc told me it was a good job I went in. I ended up having to have blood transfusions due to blood loss and had started to go into shock.

if it doesn't feel right it's probably not right.

Its best to get it checked out.

    Hope your ok now.

I'm resting and taking it easy.

    Hi Chaddie.

I am 3 weeks post-op today. My recovery from TH with exeption of  my left ovary. So far my recovery has been great thank God. Was able to walk up to 2 miles within the first week. Prior to surgery my daily walking routine was up to 6miles. Last week was experiencing brown spotting, however last night noticed red blood through the evening changing two pad liners. Not a lot of blood but concerned a little. I can sleep well through the night and in the morning feel rested and no spooting.  Was wondering if I'm not overdoing it throughout the day. Ventured for a 2 miles short drive on Saturday and 2 miles back and forth from church on Sunday. Feel OK but little uncomfortable driving. I thought maybe standing in church or the afternoon walk (2miles) caused the bleeding. This morning I was OK. Did some dishes and rested. The more I rest there's NO spotting. My question is how much is to much moving around vs. resting? My first post-op appointment is on the 14 of March exactly one month after the surgery. Experienced no other pain or cramping and been off pain meds (Tyrenol and Motrin) the first week.

I hope this helps and give me a bit of insight on chores and distance walking post-op.

Have a blessed day and wish you a fast recovery.
