3 years after gallbladder removed, now getting severe heartburn again WHY

Can anyone help tell me why this is happening? I know my body still produces bile from the liver even without a gallbladder anymore, but for 3 years exactly it's been fine no matter what I eat. Then all of a sudden I've had severe heartburn pain twice in 3 weeks!

The first time a few weeks ago I could put it down to having eaten a lot of fatty foods all in the same day, but since then I've been too scared to eat much fatty food because it's so painful the heartburn is really severe. I've been very careful and have even lost weight from not eating so much since it happened a few weeks ago.

Now it's happened again I'm really getting worried. Should I avoid everything with fat? That's so difficult but if it's necessary I can do it just to stop this pain.

The only medication that has ever worked for me with these issues, pre-gallbladder removal and now, is ranitidine which I always keep in my cupboards just in case. It took 30 minutes to start working last time and today it's taken an entire hour to help ease the pain.... the box says to only take one, but if this happens again...will it take even longer to work? Should I take twice the dosage anyway?

Should I see my GP? I have no faith they can do anything about it but should get referred to gastro specialist? Is there anything they can even do....what more can be done if the gallbladder is already gone? Why is this happening without it? Plz help...any advice?

It’s probably a totally different  issue. Go see your GP and they’ll have a feel of your stomach to see if it’s possibly gastritis. That is really painful too! Pain in the bit between your ribs. Sometimes you can have a bug called h pylori which they test your stool for and can give you antibiotics to clear it. Treatment for the gastritis is omeprazole or lansoprazole once a day for a month. Definitely go see your GP so they can help you to feel better soon xx

Sorry to hear you're in pain again. You may have developed an hiatus hernia or an ulcer. I'd see your GP and ask to be referred to a gasteology department for further tests just to sure. So many gastric problems have the same symptoms. I was prescribed Omeprazole whilst in hospital following surgery but, six months on, I no longer take it. Husband takes it for his hiatus hernia and rarely has any issue.
