I have very distressing and embarrassing incontinence following a full hip replacement 3 years ago. My surgery was an emergency following an horrific dog attack and I have now been diagnosed with a prolapse. My surgery site and my groin is often tender, hot and uncomfortable and I still have discomfort around the hip joint. My gait is lopsided and I have trouble walking any distance due to discomfort in my back and knee,I have been told my left hip is deteriorating due to extra pressure being placed on that side.I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced any of these issues ,especially the bladder problems,it's really getting me down!

Hi biogran, its not easy to cope with all these horrid results that seem to go with hip problems, I don't have actual incontinence but I do find I have to go when I first realise I need to go if that makes sense.
Or is yours total incontinence, if it is are they going to put it right or have you got to wait.
OK if it is do you have a cafiter fitted, I know there not a great option but with the right bag nowadays there much more discrete, my friend had to have full removal and has to wear a bag full time, she actually now says she couldn't find time to keep going loo LOL please don't be embarrassed about it, but do ask to see a ufologist to see what they can do for you.
Also there are good exercises to help

Wow, you've been through it, it sounds like. So sorry anybody has to go through a dog attack. These hip replacements aren't for sissies! Mine was 9 weeks ago and everything went good, but I still have a hard time getting comfortable in bed and have minor aches and pains. Sometimes a dull pain that won't quit. I'm grateful overall, it could be worse, like what you are dealing with. Hope you get help somewhere; good luck with it all.

get them to investigate reasons for your soreness, possible low grade infection???
try to get some more physio, or hydrotherapy. Lastly I took up tai chi, and found it a great help
good luck

Sorry you had been thru a lot. Your hip replacement still in pain and hot could check for infection thru a blood test and ask for MRI.
Lopsided feeling you describe could be that the Cushing between the ball and joint is missing from osteo a sort of bone on bone and can cause up to 1/2" difference in leg legth. The surgeon can realign the new hip during replacement .
prolapse can be repaired thru surgery see a urologist.
I hope you you can manage each issue to feel better soon and schedule a doctors appointment to address the issues And try to get two or three different opinions.

dear bionic gran,
warm welcome to this hippies forum - so sorry to hear about the dog attack that caused you to get hip surgery ...
did you have a broken hip and was repair done? Could the break have caused the prolapse ?
Fellow member Maggie is very knowledgeable and her response sounds hopeful -
Bladder control is an issue after 2 THR surgeries and like AlexandriaGizmo's-
When is your hip surgery scheduled for? did you discuss this with your surgeon?
please keep in touch gran ....
big warm hug

Hi Renee,
Yes I do think the prolapse has been caused by the trauma, apparently it was a severe crush fracture and the femur was "shunted" into my kidney (consultants words). Had to be catheterised and developed infection and pneumonia,I spent sometime in the I C unit. Anyway, I've had a visit to the urologist only this morning and been given some medication to try for now.He mentioned Botox injections (yikes) and possible future surgery.
The latter will need to be greatly considered because of previous lung surgery as I was in recovery from cancer when the dog attacked me !
I'm feeling there's only so much cutting up and removing a person can take, hence the family nickname bionic gran !
I was wondering if anyone else had experienced similar bladder issues following surgery, Seems to be part and parcel to some degree.
Many thanks to all the other hippies who responded with information and kind words, good wishes and good health to you all.and -----keep walking !
Love,BG.
