300 mg ranitidine

Posted , 6 users are following.

I have been on 40 mg protonix for over 2 years for silent reflux. My doctor was talking to me about dementia that could be associated with ppi long term use and wanted me to try Ranitidine once a day. I have been on it 2 weeks and have heartburn every day and now Dr. is suggesting 300 mg twice a day . Any thoughts or experience with this?

Hate to say it, but it sounds like your doctor is really misinformed. A 2017 study published in the British Medical Journal confirmed that PPI use does not increase dementia or Alzheimer's risk. Here's a link to the study: https://www.bmj.com/content/357/bmj.j3063

As for using Ranitidine as a substitute......that makes no sense. Ranitidine is an H2 antagonist and repeated use of H2 antagonists leads to a rapid development of tachyphylaxis, which means your body builds up a tolerance to the medication and it will no longer work. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4023325/

To help put your mind at ease, watch this video and article. It's by Dr. David Johnson, Professor of medicine and chief of gastroenterology at Eastern Virginia Medical School. It's called "PPI's Why All The Mayhem?"

Hope you find this info to be of help.

Has the doctor talked to you about your diet and whether or not you take any other medications? Sometimes it's certain foods that we eat or medications that we take and no amount of ranitidine will help. I found out that I couldn't take anti-inflammatories like ibuprofin which triggered my GERD or eat soy which triggered what was once diagnosed as IBS . I take 100 mg of ranitidine at night and have been feeling 100% better.

I have been juicing celery juice for weeks and have now been off of the pantoprazole for 3 weeks. For the past 2 days my acid was very minimal I think I might have been having rebound acid. I haven't taken any medication for the past 2 days and hoping it gets even better
