Hi all

Had my left hip replaced in february 18th 2015 and the right hip done april 2014.

My right hip i felt great, scar healed fairly quickly, walking and exercising well and most in important NO PAIN which was bliss. Some things were still very difficult but on the whole i felt good

This time i dont feel well in myself cant really put my finger on it just in general feel unwell, scar is ok but not healing as quickly as before. Feel very emotional all the time even the smallest things reduce me to tears, i dread anyone being nice to me or asking me how i am as im usually end up in tears.

I see the consultant on the 1st april and im dreading it not sure why ...i guess deep down i wonder if there is something wrong with hip also cause of how i am feeling i wish i hadnt had operation but i couldnt deal with hip pain and all that came with having a bad hip and o/a.

last time i was able to walk indoors without crutches this time round i notice i limp if i dont use one.

tiredness is also a problem and heels hurt loads as well from sleeping on back have mentioned it when i had dressing removed nurse made me feel like a idiot...one of the reason why i havent gone to see anyone scared that they will think this is all in my head

trying to stay positive but feel so negative

in tears

Hello Denise.  Poor you ! I know exactly how you are feeling.  I had my op' May last year.  No pain from the moment I woke up, to now.  But with the second hip, you sort of know what to expect, progress is slower and it seems to weigh that  bit more.  Don't know why.  However, lying on ones back for the time it takes is THE worst.  I was told that I coulld turn on my good side as soon as I felt comfortable. That was about a week after the op' in my case.  Just to put a pillow between the thighs to support the operated hip.  It was a little uncomfortable for a bit but the joy of being able to turn over far outweighed the slight strangeness.

Keep your chin up.  It is a very invasive operationc, youre allowed to feel a little down.  Give in to the crying, its very cathartic !

    best wishes ,  Pamela

    I'd consider visiting your GP.

Some of these symptoms could well be of something else entirely. Best to do that first and get their opinion, then make sure you're open about how you've been to your consultant, too.

And be going and gentle with yourself.

    Hi Denise

Everyone and every op heals at different rates and you had a very quick good recovery last time but with this one you need a little longer so just take your time and go with it.

You are only 4 weeks post op so the crying is natural and I'm still walking with 1 crutch and I'm 8 weeks post op.

When you go to see consultant or/and physio tell them how you feel but I think its just this recovery taking a little longer than the last.

Give it time and you'll soon be doing everything as before.

Dear Denise, Well done you. This is such a wonderful forum. I am just over 2 weeks post op. I am a carer for my Hubby, and I will not let any one get the better of me. I had a huge meltdown at the hospital as they were  trying to make me have a spinal block. Well there was no way that this would happen so I had to have a GA. But the medical people dont understand anxiety and chronic acute anxiety. Now they will as its all my notes. I was very tearful a few days afterwards as well. But I am trying to exercise and walk about as much as possible. Anyway if you need to talk please feel free. regards amanda

Hi Denise, I had an arthroscopy in both knees and each one was completely different in the healing process.  The first was extremely painful and I cried a lot with the pain but the second one was almost pain free I don't know why they should be so different but it does happen.  I had my hip replaced in October and I still have pain in my thigh muscle so sometimes walk with one crutch, whether this is due to my knee problem I don't know but will ask the surgeon when I see him next week.  I also get depressed as I feel that I have been in pain for so long, but it has helped with this site speaking to others who are in the same boat.  When you are feeling down try playing some of your favourite music which seems to help me.  Good luck hope all goes well, Valerie

No its not in your head.  Tell the Consultant how you feel and how the hip feels too.  After having such a good recovery from the first one, I think one feels that it ought to be the same if you have a second one done, but quite often its not.  Also I think you get used to protecting the one side and then when the other one is done its different, crutches have to be in a different hand and you have to remember to do things on the other side which can be difficult for some.  After a while you should be getting back to your normal self, just give it a little more time and take it easy, its a traumatic experience going through it twice in a relatively short time.  Put on some of your favourite music, I did and it always made me feel better.  Best wishes.

    Hi Denise,

I am still waiting for my "experience", but a couple of observations...

The weather is cold, makes everytning more difficult.

Most people seem to think it takes 4 months to really get over what is major surgery.

Quite a few people seem to get down, I would guess you are not on yor own there.  Stick in there, the worst is over...
