3x Knee Ops... Still recovering! Anyone in the same boat?

Posted , 2 users are following.

So a bit of background. I am 29 and been suffering with arthritis in both knees for about 10 years.

Last year i had a lateral release on both my right and left knees about 3 months apart. Unfortunately the op’s never worked and I was still in a lot of pain.

So this year after another referral and seeing another consultant I have had a patella realiment and a mosaic plasty both on the right knee at the at same time. I’m now about 3 months post op and the crunching and knee pain is beginning to return. Physio has said not to worry but I’m scared I’m going backwards.

Unfortunately I am not able to exercises as I am back to work full time and when I get home my knee still balloons. Is this normal?

All the while the left leg is getting worse every day, still considering getting the same op on this leg too just to see if it makes it better. Anyone else in a similar positon or going through this?

Greetings! You are definitely not alone.  I had 5 knee surgeries total by the time I was 28. I'm 34 now and unfortunately, nothing has worked.  I have moderate osteoarthritis in both knees, 1 x debridement left, have had lateral releases in both knees, mosaicplasty in left, and microfracture x 2 in the right. I've had 13 different injections, ranging from supartz to cortisone and absolutely nothing has helped. The grinding doesn't go away. I've been researching the Oates procedure, but based on my job, the recovery is far too long. I've seen 4 different surgeons, all of whom have said that while I'm a candidate for partial knee replacement, I'm far too young.  With that said, I'm sorry about your pain and hopefully you will recover, but once the griding started for me it was all down hill. Best you can do is keep your weight managed and take it day by day.

Wow sounds like your in a worse position than me.

It's hard as before I had my first op I was the lightest I've ever been but that was because I was at the gym 6 times a week and trainivg hard. Now however either the recovery time of each op I'm struggling to get back to that.

In hindsite would you still have the Ops?

I'm at the point I would rather keep going to see if something works as being told theirs nothing they can do is heartbreaking!

Have you got anything further lined up?

I'm seeing my consultant on Friday to get his opinion on the left knee.

Hope your not in too much pain!

The hypothetical question you ask is one for the ages. Because of the pain I've been willing to do anything and that included eagerly lining up for every single surgery. I even had the nerves burned in the joint (had to hit the femur...ouch). With that said, honestly, after every surgery it's gotten worse, but for the chance that it may help I will continue to seek treatment. I don't have anything lined up now as I'm out of options and am too afraird of knee replacement this young.

I wish you the best and hopefully you have better pain management than I have!
