3yr old son with HSP on 5th day

Hello everyone, I joined this site in hopes to find some more info and hear from people who have been through HSP. My 3 year old son have been diagnosed with HSP and today is his 5th day of the disease. He had swelling of the joints for the first 2 days and the dots have spread everywhere on legs, thighs, bottom, genital, arms, elbows and face. He does not have any blood in urine or poop and no abdominal pain or any other of the really bad symptoms. The past 2 days he did not have any swelling of the joints just the red dots. I am crossing my fingers and hoping that the conditions does not get worse throughout the weeks to come.

What should I expect in the following weeks to come? Compare to most of the stories I read online I feel like so far he's been doing pretty good considering how much worst it can be. Is this because it's only the 1st week?? Also, can anyone tell my why the pain/ swelling/ inflamed red dots usually starts in the afternoon/ evening time?

I have been doing every thing in my power to boost his immune system to fight this aweful disease. Giving Vitamin C spray, Cod liver oil, fresh dark leafy green juice everyday and making sure he eats well and has cut out the sugars. He has a very good appetite so I'm thankful for that.

Thank you in advance for all the input and I wish everyone who's going through this disease beat this and be healthy once again.

Get him on probiotics straight away. Is he being monitored for protein and blood in his urine. The ones is usually self limiting in little ones but he should be followed up.

Probiotics, will do! His last urine and blood test was 4 days ago, everything came back normal. I'm taking him for another round of testing today because he has a slightly swollen bump on his head which hurts when I apply pressure on it. No other swelling so far today. Thanks Lucy!

Sounds like you researched and are doing the correct things already.  Seems to be of the less troublesome type of situation and therefore likely to go away and not come back.  Maybe some temporary overreaction of the immune system the body will figure out and fix or even some type of allergy that once exposed will be better next time.    The issues like rash coming on seem to also relate to how much rest the body is able to get so when getting enough sleep and/or rest body is able to better deal and get over the issue.  If this should reoccur, strongly consider tracking what is being eaten or exposed to should it happen to relate to an allergy.  If it comes on again after sore throat or sickness then maybe just immune system going weird for a while and can get over it sometime later.   Good to have younger because often the younger cases get over it as if the body is young enough to adjust itself and not have it again later in life.   Best of luck to you all !

Thank you harleycw, I saw the doctor today and his urine came back clear of any blood which was really good news. I'll def be more aware of what he eats and is exposed to. He has been battling the cold back to back with a cough, maybe his immune system was in overdrive, who knows! I'm taking him out of school for about 2 months or more until I feel like he's fully recovered and his immune system is not at risk, I do not want a relapse.

Hi Salina, I'm sorry your son has this terrible disease. I'm glad to know your son has the milder symptoms that come with this disease. Your doing good for him to boost his immunity in any way you can. Keep sodium amounts to a minimal, it will help keep swelling at bay as well keep him well hydrated to keep his kidneys working properly. This disease lasts much longer than 4-6 wks. The pain and swelling can last for months at least this is our experience. My daughter has had this terrible disease now for almost 5 months. Just this week she has had terrible pain and swelling in her legs as well as hives on her legs and face. We have been very fortunate thus far to not have any kidney involvement. She goes in this week for follow-up. I thought out was important to reply to you since you are just beginning this awful journey and wanted to give you a better idea of what to expect and from what hsp sites don't tell you. Has your son experienced the purple rashes yet?? If not, that is the purpura which is broken small blood vessels under the skin. It can be excruciating and even cause temporary disability of the legs from the pain and swelling. I hope this doesn't happen to your son. Do not give ibuprofen for pain. Instead use Tylenol. The saddest part of this whole thing is there isn't much to help them. ...the reason for the breakouts and swelling mainly at night is from the days activities. Tylenol and elevating the legs can help. ...I will keep you in my prayers.

Hi Grneyedgrl74, thank you very much for your best wishes and information. I wish your daughter the best of health and hope she starts feeling like herself again soon! It's such a long ordeal but as you said we're both fortunate that the kidneys are not affected so far. My son got up this morning with a nose bleed and very slight blood in poop but absolutely no pain so the doctor advised that I keep monitoring him.

Yes, the dots are everywhere ( pupura) and looks like another set is starting to come out again.
