4 Arthroscopes and still in pain... options/opinions?

Hi, I'm 34 and in the past 4yrs of I've had 4 hip Arthroscopes.

1st hip - 3 Arthroscopes to repair torn labrum & torn ligamentum teres and finally ligamentum teres removal. Severe synovitis.

2nd hip - 1 Arthroscope 3 months ago to repair the ligamentum teres. Severe synovitis.

Both hips are still hurting constantly and I can't drive, manage stairs without aids or have any sort of life. I have 2 young children and I need to get my life back sad

Im waiting to see my surgeon in a few weeks and I've been thinking about possible hip replacement but I've never heard of anyone to receive a replacement after so many arthroscopes?Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thankyou

Liddy, I don't have much information other than I was in hospital with a lady of 31 who had just had her first replacement. She said she had a history of many, many procedures on her hips as you described which all failed. She also has 2 small children and no life before.

I am in touch with her and the change has been immediate and she can't wait for number two.

She lived in Birmingham before and her consultant there had refused to do a THR but here in Cornwall our consultant believes in giving you back some life.

I don't see why having multiple Arthroscopes would stop you having a THR, however, if what is causing your pain is not the joint, but is the ligaments, muscles etc around it, having a THR may not actually help you at all, and at worst could make it more painful.

THR is to treat Osteorthritis of the joint, the grinding of bone-on-bone when the cartilage is worn away, and if the femoral head is damaged (fracture, crumbling bone etc).

Lets hope your surgeon can get to the bottom of your pain and sort it out for you. Remember that THRis not a 'magic' cure for all hip related pain.

Note to self - I am not medically trained, so when did I become a medical expert on this?  Simple, when my hip replacement went wrong in Oct/Nov last year, and I started reading and studying about it.

Thanks so much for your reply Graham, it means a lot to me smile I'm really sorry to hear how your operation went, I understand that it's definitely not something to enter into lightly and isn't a solution for everyone.

I've just become so desperate that I don't know what else there is to help me. I've exhausted the use of painkillers, anti inflammatories, nerve medicines, exercise and all different types of osteos, Physio and acupuncture etc. Cortisone injections are the only thing that has provided any relief but only for around 3 weeks. The first hip surgeon I saw thought I had mild hip dysplasia but I'm not too sure. I feel like there is something very wrong with my hips and cleaning them out and repairing the tears isn't working. Any activity and weight bearing is so painful.

I really really hope things improve for you!

      Liddy,

That is the wonderful thing about this forum, we share experiences and problems.  I really hope that someone can getto the root cause of your pain.  It's no joke to be in such pain, I know, and painkillers can only do so much.

Sounds like you need a real specialist in problem hips.  Whereabouts are you?   I am being referred to the UK's Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore as they specialise in 'problem joints', and only take on the more difficult cases.
