4 months after Total Hip Replacement - posterior

Posted , 9 users are following.

I am now 4 months after THR and am feeling a tightness in my groin area when I bend and lift this leg. Also when I have been walking for quite a bit or standing baking or making dinner, leg gets tired. Am still using 2 sticks outside but am walking indoors without them. Walking perfectly straight.

Do you think I am doing too much and should I continue to use these 2 sticks. Have previous had 18 major abdominal operations and the THR was the 19 major operation.

Perhaps it is taking me a wee bit longer after all I have been through, to collect my energy.

Thanks to all who reply.

    Dear Jean

What is important is to be steadily moving forward at whatever pace feels comfortable for you and to rest when you need to.

I would suggest using both crutches until you are walking really strongly and with a good gait. I found that a time came when I felt heck I really don't need these things and that was when I stopped using them!

    Good luck, Richard

    Jean,

Sounds to me like you’re doing fine! You might want to try using trekking poles instead of crutches, since it appears you are allowed to be weight bearing. Trekking poles provide a degree of support but also help keep you upright and engage upper body. I would not stop all walking aids until you feel strong enough. Also, are you doing a PT? If not, that could be very helpful to help you regain strength.

Yes, Gasparilla, I am still doing all my exercises which my physiotherapist instructed. Have had 8 sessions

of physiotherapy, and now been discharged. My physiotherapist spoke to my Consultant about this and he said it is a deep muscle in my groin and if it is still bothering me, I should come back to see him.

Just wondered about the sticks - I feel I still need them when out walking, especially on uneven surfaces, but so many people tell one they had rid of their sticks after 6 weeks. There are always people who are negative, and makes one wonder if they are doing the right thing.

      Thanks for replying.

I am 3 months in a weeks time post THR. I had many rough nights as there is nothing to distract you from the pain at nights. I am walking good now,and use no aids. I don’t push the walking has I developed very low hemoglobin and required a 2 bag blood transfusion and now need to have 5  consecutive weekly iron infusions. The hip has some tightness in scar area. I too have had a few major abdominal surgeries, not near as many as you. I found the laying on your non operated side and lifting your operated leg and holding it for 5 seconds to stretch exercise caused a big discomfort in hip area. At this stage I’ve stopped the required exercises as I think everyday life is fine. I am having my hip ex rayed next week and seeing my surgery the following week. Hoping for a good out come. We are all so different.

I had a hip revision from a twenty year old hip replacement

Feb 7 and after 10 weeks started driving.  Dislocated hip and waited 8 weeks and hip dislocated again.   Now into second week after second dislocation  I felt great and all I can tell you is to be very careful, because now I am fared to even go out to dinner or start pt again .  If it goes out one more time they will have to operate again

crikey ,jean, thats some history-19 ops!for what my opinions worth,i think youre not doing too bad-,i know plenty get well faster-but plenty dont, too,we are all different! Im nearly at th 4 month point, and i really wish i could have used 2 crutches but living alone  and with 3 dogs to walk-i needed to manage with one asap(needed spare hand for dog leads!)-im still using one, doing plenty of walking, but im still limping when i get tired, sometimes i think i ll never be able to walk stickless!hard to know if youre doing too much, isnt it-especially when youre used to being busy.best wishes x
