4 months post op - pain after exercise :(

Hi Everyone, I was doing really well at 4 months post op and feeling pretty much "normal" - both my surgeon and physio said I was fine to exercise having checked me over. So I went to do a very gentle beginners Pilates class a week ago. I used to do a lot of Pilates over a year ago so this was my first time back and I chose a slow class. The class itself went fine, it felt easy and I had no pain. However I woke up with my entire leg aching that night and it has been "tweaky" for a few days, and now that has stopped I am getting quite a bit of aching. I feel very despondent about this and everyone keeps saying "take it slow" but I feel I have set myself back and have had to take some anti inflammatories. Has anyone else had a similar experience or any advice, I would really appreciate it! Many thanks

Hi Louise,  I am six months post op and still have that ache you talk about.  Have tried to play tennis without running and have tried Pilates too.  I had a really good week two weeks ago completely pain free.  Walked loads and played tennis  but this week even a short walk and I have that ache like toothache after about five minutes of walking.  My physio just tells me I have had major surgery which is extremely brutal and everything takes time to heal

    Hi louise,

i am also 4 months post and feel pain if i overdo anything.  I recentlt went back to the pool in an attempt at swimming, after 30 years.  I noticed that just being in the water was wonderful and swimming adds to this in a ver good way.   I think what you are going thru is normal, following your pilates classes...just wait and see

Thats very early to start Pilates. I was told to take toilet seat raise on a cruise @ 10wks post surgery. And only went back to yoga Pilates tennis at 7 months.  Even now my leg aches at the end of a non exercise day and by midday if I do morning classes. If you are taking painkillers it gives a false sense of wellbeing so I take a minimal dose tramacet before a class just to be aware of any tension and avoid obviously crossing operated leg over at 90º. Sometimes repose is better than activity even if it goes against your natural instinct. Doing daily classes finally took toll and I slept for 18 hours unable to get up! Err on the side of caution. Ou il faut s' approcher avec precaution.

Thank you everyone.. I was feeling depressed but now I know others are in the same boat I feel a little less so. However, it would be fantastic to not feel any pain at all after simple exercise but I guess I just need more time smile
