4 Months post THP pain getting worse at night

Hello All ,

Im here in Australia and after suffering from increasing pain Ive been reading alot of your comments.

I have had a total of 3 arthroscopies over a 2 year period ,which didnt help resulting in a THP 4 months ago. Ive had a relatively slow recovery but felt I was sarting to progress quite well .No walking aids unless its been a very long day of waliking and I begin to limp more. Ive been walking daily at a gentle pace on my treadmill .Im stiff to begin with but it seems to help as I get going .Both my doctor and physio seem to think its ok to continue with that as Im not in any pain when doing so. I  was also doing pyhsio and hydrotherapy until about 4 weeks ago when he pain at night began to increase .Im now having intense massage by my pyhsiotherapist once a week .But if anything I feel the pain is becoming worse every night ! Im becoming increasingly frustrated as I thought the THP would be the holy grail .I was told that it would end my pain . Im mostly good all day but awake every night from 1.30 - 2 am with a nagging deep throbbing pain on my hip /thigh area which radiates down to my knee.At times its a sudden intense sharp pain that comes in waves taking my breath away ,then it settles or resumes to the more constant dull aching .

Can anyone out ther associatte with this and help shed some light on what could be causing it ? My physiotherapist has been really good but is still working through possible reasons himself . I apparanlty have quite alot of scar tissue in the operation area also .

The sleep deprevation along with the pain is so overwhelming ,I hope anyone can help me with their advice or if they have suffered the same issues .

Get to your Surgeon. Request an x-ray. Could be a muscle, stem or something else it does sometimes takes a year + for things to settle down

That's exactly what I've decided to to again . I made an appointment directly after posting that question

    Hi Jenelle,

Since I have not had my procedure yet all I can offer is a friendly ear across the miles.  Glad you are reaching out to everyone (Dr., Physio, forums, etc.) you never know where/when you might hear of something that will click.

So sorry you are having these issues.  Sleep deprivation is no good, I do hope they can at least give you something for that a few nights a week so you can keep your strength and spirit up.

Even if you just need to chat, the group is here for you.

(is anyone else noticing a 2-day lag on notification of new threads?)

      Thank you so much Kebra.

I truly appreciate your well wishes . Since writing this post I have seen my physio guy again and I also have an appointment now with my orthopedic surgeon next week !

Current thoughts are that my actual hip replacement is all good and not the issue . They are now looking at possible Trochanteric Bursitis which may have developed on the outer hip as well as Meralgia Paraestgetica , which is a nerve issue on the inside of the pelvic bone abdominal area . Forgive me I'm trying to get my head around the medical terms for what is suspected to be going on . Both two completely different things but could combined could be the cause of the various symptoms im suffering. It's looking like I will be having 1-2 CT or ultrasound guided cortisone injections at both sites to see if this helps settle things down . In the meantime I'm to stop all physio and the walking I've been doing daily on my treadmill to see if it will all settle ! I'm also now back to doing Ice therapy .

It certainly was alarming to find so many people on this site with post op complications but comforting if that makes sense to know I'm not alone . And that I'm definitely not making a it all up nor looking for sympathy , just looking for solutions and an end to it all .

Thank you once again for reaching out and I truly hope everything goes absolutely according to plan for your surgery .

      All the Best

    Hi Jenelle,

It sounds as though you've done all the right things after your FHR.   The pain you describe doesn't sound normal at all.  I would go back to the specialist.

    Wishing you the best!
