4 MONTHS POST THR - still pain at ball & socket

Posted , 5 users are following.

From the first day after my THR, I had pain at my ball & socket when putting weight on op leg.  It took about 8 weeks before I could put full weight on it at all.  Now, doing well EXCEPT when taking a walk.  I feel pain at the ball & socket area - not horrible, just enought to notice every step that something is still going on... Walking around the house is fine, but when walking faster, still have that pain.  Anyone else??

    Hi Sue,

I still feel some of this at 6 months - esp after sitting for any length of time or (worse) skipping my regular exercise sessions each day. However, if this continues or gets worse, be sure to check in with your GP or surgeon. There is no need to worry if they can ease your mind and you've already invested a lot of time and effort into this recovery so you dont want to risk this. But ... it does take a year for full recovery according to my surgeon.

It may be the ball and socket in your case, but much of the aches and pains we feel are actually muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc that were stretched or cut during the surgery. Another forum member reported that she and her PT counted 20 + sets of connective tissues that need to heal after this surgery! And clearly the healing of some takes a while longer as we start introducing more intense levels of activity and exercise.

I hope your recovery goes smoothly. Please let us know how you are doing and if you learn anything else that might help other members make a stronger recovery.

    Best wishes,

    L

Thank you, Linda.  I just worry because very few people here mention that particular issue of pain when walking/weight bearing after several months... I guess if it continues after another month, I'll go see my surgeon again.

Thanks for the encouragement and reminder about the 20+ sets of tissues in that area!

Hope your discomfort abates soon, too!

    Anna,

Good luck with your appointment next week.  Yes, I've mentioned it to my doctor.  He keeps saying that healing "takes time" and the xrays look fine.

    dear sue,

great responses !!!  I just read that you have seen your doctor and all is well ...

there is a lot of healing taking place, also around the hardware - the body is accepting these foreign bodies that need to be integrated in the system -

it is good to challenge yourself however, when it hurts, stop - listen to your body, okay and come back here any time ...

    big warm hug
