4 Week update

Just a quick note to update on my progress.  Glad to say progress is moving along very rapidly indeed - I am stickless for almost all the time now other than when on trips to the supermarket or other busy locations.

Pain wise - stick have the buttock ache but often I may have a couple of paracetamol per day which I am happy with.  Stiffness is the main problem now - once i am up and moving it's fine.

Just had my first bath and have taken off my stockings - I just couldn't stand wearing them for another day but as I am increasingly mobile I don't see this as a major problem.  In fact a number of people on here didn't even get the stockings - lucky them.

In terms of doing things - I'm pretty much doing as much as I want to - including washing the cars, DIY, cooking and cleaning.  Yes I still get tired but I can't honestly believe how well it's going given the ordeal the body has to go through.

Interestingly I am noticing more pain down the thigh bone - I was warned that this should be expected around 4-6 weeks due to the uncemented hip and the fusing process that happens as the bone grows onto the new joint.

Anyway just wanted to let you know the positive progress.

I am 6 weeks p.o I still use a crutch when I am out but indoors I walk round without sticks, also started to walk the spoilt 4 legged greyhound in the house lol I see the surgeon on Friday I am going to push to get the other hip done my own GP has advised me to do this as the x rays showed that both hips were moderate to severe the surgeon called it advanced arthritis so I presume he is referring it as being severe. Sleeping is my main problem I can't lay on the operated side but I can lay on the UN operated side until I get a bit stiff then end up on my back

Hi.  Glad to hear it is all going well.  I did wonder how you were after your longer stay in hospital.  Just pace yourself as I am 11 weeks post op and still get tired and feel a bit stiff, especially lower back.  Amazed you kept stockings on that long. Mine were off after 1 week!  Best wishes Sarah

1 week Sarah - I thought I was taking a risk at 4 weeks!  I did manage the full 6 weeks when my hip was pinned previously but had enough this time.

I think you know  when to do or not do something. I didn't find hospital much help when I went for 6 week check up, so that is why I came on here.  Keep us posted on recovery, as interesting to know how we are all getting along.

Yes not expecting much from the 6 week check other than a quick look at the scar and a couple of questions.  Its more the relaxation of the various constraints that I am looking forward to - itching to drive.

Nice to hear Mark, I am also getting better faster than expected, been signed back to work now after 6 weeks, but am on Paid leave not Sick Time waiting for the left one to be done, right leg has grown back to what it used to be 10 yrs ago, hope that my left is quick to follow, and I am left sided.

I drove for the first time today in six weeks, and my left is killing me even with 2X50mg Tramadols after the outing, but needed the fresh air and my wife has become reclusive which is worrying, she came out, my little Pearl was out of her shell today...And it was nice for just a few hours, beach and garden center was very pleasant to get out together, she is asleep in the chair righ now due to the fresh air shes missed out on reading in bed all day every day for the last 6 weeks.

Congrats to you for getting well so soon like me, you are a strong person and taking back your life.

Thanks for posting, to give others sone good news in their moments or worry, doubts, and anticipation.

    Kind regards Ian.

Thanks Ian - we need to spread the positivity at times.  Not to gloat or boast but to reassure people that the outcomes can be positive as sometimes on forums, and this goes for all forums on the internet, you can  be overwhelmed by some of the problems that are posted which can worry people.  I am not saying they should not post, absolutely not, but we need a balance - it's good to hear good and bad.

Glad to hear you are doing so well. I kept my socks on for the full 6 weeks as I had a bit of a DVT scare after a week. Luckily it was negative.

Yes the stockings may be a pain but are nothing compared to DVT, it will be six weeks for me.

Thanks so much for this Mark. I have just found this forum and your comments have been very reassuring.  I am 3.5 weeks post op and have been amazed at my rapid recovery.  I have been able to walk round the block on sticks and was only using crutches on stairs.  However yesterday I started having more pain in groin.  I am confused as I have been doing well.  I have tested myself and find I can still do everything like walking smoothly, full forward, backward sideways movement but somehow it just hurts and feels stiff.  Have decided to take step back, back on painkillers, back on sticks and do all the exercises until it settles down.

I did a little too much yesterday - cut the grass, bbq, built a storage unit, went shopping, watered the veg patch, bounced on the trampoline for 30 minutes (not really!).

Leg lets me know when I've pushed it but today feels fine - everyone is different and has different levels of expectation but I feel it's important that we push ourselves to get the best outcomes.

Well done Mark, you have to do what you feel you can do or you will never know what you can do!!

I went to a firework display last night and a music festival. I wandered and stood on my crutches for 3 hours, fireworks were great. Slept like a log for 8 hours, bit tired and knackered tis morning but am off out to the RSPCA rescue centre open day, and to see the vulcan bomber later today.

Thanks for the inspiration guys.  I went to a barbecue last night but didn't stand for any longer than half hour chatting.  Made me realise that my head needs the stimulation of normal stuff and that my body will follow.  Not being allowed to drive for a few more weeks is a nuisance but will take myself on longer walks. I did test myself with a sneaky drive to a pub the other night (3 weeks and THR is on right hip) and I was absolutely fine so now just have to persuade those with authority that I am safe and capable.
