4 weeks after THR

I am 20 and recovering from having a THR on my left hip after years and years of operations and agonising pain I can already tell the difference. 3 days after my operation I could tell the difference. The operation wasnt as straight forward as they planned as my hip was in really bad condition which they were not aware of as it did not show on X-rays, they were suprised I could even walk. I know I am not fully recovered, I am still in pain and have a long way to go but I honestly would recommend it to anyone who has dealt with nonstop daily pain and this is the final option. I waited a while before I decided to have a THR because I am so young but I am so glad I have done it. Touch wood that it stays like this and I do not get any pain once I start walking without my crutches!

I was wondering how long it has taken over people to recover and how easy was it to go from crutches to nothing?

Thank you!

Hi...it is truly wonderful to be without the pain prior to operation! Ive haf both hips replaced although much older..in my 50s. I live in US. I started with a walker then cane. At 10 weeks i am begining to walk without cane. I keep it nearby!  Plan on getting back to work in abt two weeks. We all recover differently. Just take your time and follow all precautions. You will be up before you know it. Good luck!

WoW Lauren you are so young to have this done but obviously it was nec.

I'm two weeks out of revision for another thr.  I had the first one 3 months prior.  I'm 48 and stay in CA.   I guess because I've already been through it I'm moving through the healing quite quickly.  I'm already walking my dog and helped my son work on a car- passing parts yesterday.  I elevate my leg and Ice at least 3 times a day and am feeling thst familiar tightness in my thigh so I know I need to get in and get a deep tissue massage.  They help loosen everything up and get that circulation going.

I've also been driving already which I don't recommend for anyone else but considering I've already been doing this surgery thing for a while and have no family around besides my children I need to handle business, get them to school and will buy a bag or two of groceries today.   For sure will need help loading and unloading def not lifting.

Considering your thr was not the normal straight forward one you will have to take it slow and listen to your body.  What was wrong with your hips to begin with??  That of course Wil have so much to do with your healing and where ever the weaknesses are they will still be there and you'll have to go to physical therapy or physio to show you the exercises.

I hope the best for you.so you will be able to enjoy your life ahead with as little pain as possible.

Time frame?  Most people say a full yr before everything is healed and working well.

Best thing on your side is your youth!!  Huge plus!😃  Once you start healing you will make great bounds with it.  I soOo hope everything turns out beautifully pain free for you!

When did the surgeons say you can start putting weight on it?  Do you use a walker?  Way better then crutches.

    Hi lauren,

So sorry you've had such suffering at your young age. I hope you don't think me rude for asking, what was the root cause of your bone damage?

So, as for walking without assistance, it is pretty much a result of your efforts. Meaning, what can you tolerate? At your age, you will rehabilitate quickly.

You've been real brave. My opinion, having the right mindset is a big part of the healing process.

    Hi Lauren,

Take each day as you find it, in other words listen to your body and don't push it too hard. You are much younger than I was when I had my THR so I can't really judge how much you could do. For me it's taken a long time but as you are young and energetic I guess you'll soon be able to manage well.

I'm thinking of you and praying for a speedy recovery for you.

    Hi Lauren.

There's no time limited on how long it will take to recover as everyonr is different. your body will let you know when it's ready to come off the cruthes.

I use the 2 crutches for over 4 months then went to 1 crutch am not 6 months pre op and back to work am not using the crutch but i do take a walking stick with me when out and about if in case i do get tired and need a little help but i can get around indoors without using any aid.

    It's early days for you.

Good Luck and keep us posted on your progress
