4 weeks of recovery so far

So I am into my 4th week of recovery!

Which means I only have two weeks left of wearing these dreadful stockings!

I have no more arthritic pain and I am very thankful for that.

I do have however still have my dressing on but its only leaking a small amount now.

I am happy to use one crutch indoors but have a stumbling block when going back to one outside. But will do another short walk with just one later on today.

My operated side thigh feels very tight and I am struggling to walk without a limp unaided, although I am trying at home as well.

I am doing all my my exercises, but the one I really struggle with is the 'clam', I do this on with my operated side and really cannot lift my leg unless I use my hand!

I am sure the walking will come back soon but I am happy to have no more pain and walking with crutches is a pleasure just have to get rid of limp so that is a pleasure without.

you lie on non operated side, knees go to a 90 degree angle. Keeping feet together raise your operated leg!! (me with great difficulty) Its suppose to a strengthen exercise but I am working on it.

It was an exercise the physio showed me. I guess that I am just worried that unaided walking its not as good as should be. (Thinking to far forward on amount of walking that I can do in work)! I am sure it will come in the end!

Good luck with your 6 week check and your work meeting. I am hoping that they are not expecting you back too soon.

    hi Ann

think your expecting to much walking without a limp already. At 2 months I still needed 2 crutches and then just one crutch or a walking stick for a further month, I also had a slight limp for weeks after, i am now 11 months post tlhr and you would never know I'd had it done it feels great now, you just need to take your time and be patient do loads of walking with your crutches to build the muscle up and you'll be fine.

      Thanks Philip,

It seems to be connected to when I limped before the op as well. But I am suppose to handing crutches back at 6 weeks. I will get a stick before then , 2 if I need 2. I am not intending to go back to work before 3 months and then I will be insisting on phase return.

I try and get out 2/3 times a day and have managed nearly 5000 steps at times.

I am just relieved that I do bot have any arthritic pain.

Don't be in a rush to walk unaided PierinaAnn, regardless of what other people do or say. I used a crutch or walking stick until about week twelve as the bone with the implant in was uncomfortable to put weight on.

At 10.5 months post op, my thigh around the scar area still feels tight even though I do pilates twice a week, step aerobics, zumba and exercise in the house most days on my elliptical walker and floor exercises.

You are not in a race, no medals are awarded therefore, only do things when it feels right, not because others say they are doing this or that at a very early stage.

Good luck with the rest of your recovery.

I will stop worrying. And just enjoy walking with crutches and then sticks afterwards, if it takes a little longer than so be it.

Four weeks is early days - use the sticks / canes until the limp has gone. The clam isn't easy, but persevere, it does help.

So glad you are doing well.

Doing the clam is very tricky and it pulls on the groin area. I will work on them and my walking with crutches until I need to hand them back.

Thank you all for your support so far!

You are very likely to have a faster and more positive return to normal walking if you use two crutches until you are walking strongly and with a good. gait. Cheers Richard

I am sticking with two, especially when out walking, I can hold my head up high and have no pain at all. All advice is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Ann

I am currently 4 weeks post op and in the same position that you were (not being able to walk without a crutch without limping). I wondered if you could update me on you progress between then and now ?

    Hi

I can only agree with everyone else, embrace using both crutches and walk often with them, i kept mine until around weeks 8-10 and no limp at all .

    Good Luck
