4 weeks post op and feeling a bit fed up!

Hello all, I had my right hip replaced nearly 4 weeks ago due to arthritis. I am only 33, so it was a big decision, but the daily pain from the arthritis was becoming extremely limiting.
I would say my recovery has been fairly smooth so far but at 4 weeks, as I try to do more, I feel I am taking one step forward and two back! I have been walking daily and started pottering about the house and all has been okay, but I now seem to have a lot of pain in my buttock, thigh and groin. I keep worrying I have done something to it but I am sure it is just muscular.
I guess I am just feeling a little bit down and looking for some reassurance that this is normal! Did other people find pain increased as they tried to do more?
My dad had his hip done 2 years ago and was back at work after 4 weeks! I know everyone heals differently, but as he is the only person I know who went through it, he’s my only comparison, which isn’t easy as his recovery seemed to be ridiculously smooth!
Any advice on how to build up strength in the leg etc would be most welcome - I was basically discharged with some exercises and being told the restrictions and have felt very unsupported other than that (apart from my partner who has been a star, even if he’s not very good at dusting!!!)
No one really told me what I could expect week to week or when it would be okay to start doing a few bits in the house etc!
I guess I am waiting for my ‘thank god I had this done!’ moment to come!
So any advice, experiences or general pep talks would be a massive help! ☺️
Thank you all in advance.

Hi..just wondering..is the pain so bad that you can't walk anymore? Can you describe the pain.? Of course you will discomfort that is to be expected. I would take it easy for a few days and see if it subsides..I'm 9 weeks post op. I had discomfort but not pain..I never had to use pain pills..only maybe the first few days home..

Pain is feeling a bit better this morning...mainly just in groin now, the buttock pain seems to have eased thank god! It hasn’t been bad enough to stop me walking, more like walking on a leg when you have exercised and feel all the muscles pulling. I had quite a lot of swelling around scar area last night but that has gone down this morning.
I need to call the doctor this morning anyway so I will mention it just in case but I am hoping I just overdid it! It’s hard not to when you start feeling a bit better isn’t it?! Thanks again for coming back to me and I’m glad you are recovering well ☺️

I’m missing my independence so much and like you am still waiting for that moment where I can walk far and freely again and go back to ‘normal’
I limp badly without a stick but some days are better than others.
I just don’t know if I’ve done too much or not enough.
Even the people I know that have had it done experienced different things. I guess no two people are the same.
It does feel like one forward two back but we have to keep reminding ourselves it’s been a major op and still early. Keep taking the pain killers as I tried to give them up too early x

I also hate having lost my independence and I think that’s making it harder to sit back and take it easy!
You are completely right about pain relief, I had a few days where I felt okay so I didn’t take it as often and perhaps that was a mistake so I am back on it now! We will get there I am sure, I just can’t wait like you to have that eureka moment! X

Hi Vix. I too had athritis but fell and broke the same leg. I am 17 weeks post op using a walking stick sometimes but not all the time. I feel no pain really most of the time but occasionally I get stiffness of sorts it's hard to explain but I just don't feel like it's my leg! After sitting for any length of time I get very stiff and it takes 6 - 10 steps to kind of walk normally. It gets better but can be very frustrating at times. I can only reach my toes now if I'm careful but I'm still very wary of dislocation. Slow and steady is the way forward. Take care.

I had issues with my SI joint..what your describing sounds similar...Google SI joint dysfunction...good news is it's fixable with exercise..just thought I would share that with you..I'm just saying it could be..
Feel better

I know what you mean about feeling it’s not your leg - I get that sometimes when I’m sat and when I’m walking! I wonder where my leg is and why it’s not responding properly! Lol!
I think I have had a lot of stiffness like you and perhaps the walking and pottering has just been a bit too much the last few days.
It’s good to know you are not getting any real pain now though, onwards and upwards! Hopefully I will feel the same way soon! X

Hi there,
I had a right full hip replacement 7 1/2 weeks ago - so I’ve recently had my 6 week check., so far all fine.
I think it is a fairly natural progression but I often found that I was doing something new without even thinking about it.
However I do remember feeling pain in various places, groin and calf for instance and feeling anxious in case I had been too energetic - or worrying if I had a lot of pain that I had maybe caused a problem.
In fact I have progressed, probably, pretty much to book - but it’s difficult to know because we are all so different.
However it sounds to me as if you are doing very well and hopefully won’t regret the operation.
Possibly too soon to get carried away - I think even 7 weeks is too soon to get blasé - patients and small steps forward is good enough!

I am sure I will get to the point where I am pleased I had it done, and you are right, patience is the key! X

Hi Vix, it's 4 weeks, nothing in terms of your recovery, slow down and stop trying to run before you walk, your dad probably wasn't doing as much as you, ask him, even though he was back at work maybe it's a desk job.
If it's really bad give your Dr a visit or your surgeon.
Just remember it's major surgery and your worried your not doing more than normal people lol

I've just had my left hip replaced aged 49 having had my right replaced aged 39 both for arthritis. I am coming up to 3 weeks post op and still get a lot of pain and stiffness. Some good days some not so good. However I'm doing much better than after my first hip replacement and I have put this down to religiously performing all of my physiotherapy exercises 3x daily which I neglected first time. I remember last time really struggling for the first 4 to 5 weeks but then turned a corner. I didn't get back to work for 2 months then and I suspect it will be longer this time.
It sounds to me like you are doing fine. Just don't push too hard, take your pain killers and keep at the stretching exercises as there is no replacement for them. You'll turn a corner soon for sure.

You are coming along fine. Walking, rest and ICING are the best medicine at this point.
Come on here often for support. No one knows what you are going through more than other hippies! The folks on here are amazing.
Keep on healing!♡

It’s easy to lose sight of how much your body endures during the op and how much needs to repair itself isn’t it?!
You are completely right about this group - I am so glad I reached out and am overwhelmed by all the support and helpful responses. Wishing you well with your continued recovery. ☺️
