4 Weeks Post-Op Tomorrow And Walking Unaided....

Posted , 13 users are following.

Hi All, first I hope all of you are doing well. Just making a small post because I am so thrilled about how my second hip is going. Even though I had a really rough start/surgery my hip is doing wonderful. I had been using a cane but recently started trying to walk unaided. Now I am at the point that I walk most of the day with no aid. When I do have the cane I forget about it and leave it behind! I notice that everyday my walk seems to be a little better and I feel stronger with less pain. When I first get up or start to move I have a little bit of a waddle but it goes away rather quickly. This is the best I have been able to walk in over 18 months. It feels like a miracle and has been a long time coming. Wishing you all the best. I haven't been on so much actually been feeling so well I haven't even been home and have been staying really busy. Missing you all and sending healing thoughts and warm hugs....Barb

Thanks renee, yes their is hope. I was such a mess. I was so bad before my rthr in May that I couldn't even stand for a second without leaning on something, anything to hold me up. If I tried to even hobble a few steps the pain in the hips and my back was so bad I just couldn't do it. I was that way for such a long time because of a mis-diagnosis from one Ortho office. Once I got my rthr I had some improvement but wasn't able to walk or function normal still. The left was so terribly bad also that I knew I would never be "right" until it was also done. Now I am so happy getting close to normal. I kind of waddle for a few steps when I first get up and have to concentrate on walking correctly, but doing great...My advice to everyone is don't give up their is a light at the end of the tunnel...Hugs...Barb

Thank you renee you are so kind and have the most generous hugs...I appreciate all of your support and kindness so very much. Yes I am so happy. Is all I have said for so long now "all I want is to be back to my normal self" Hard to believe that I went from 3 years ago walking 5 miles a day at maximum incline of my treadmill to not even being able to walk, bend or stand and couldn't even function. I was like that for about 18 months total. It feels like a dream come true to be able to walk fairly normal and with very little pain (if any). My brothers and I have inherited the family home. My parents had it custom built 52 years ago. We want to put it up for sale but it was pretty dated. So we have been at it for about 3 months now trying to get it done, mostly my brothers doing the work but I have helped when I can. The new countertops were installed yesterday and my sister in-law and I were out shopping for the backsplash material. I originally want the glass squares for the wall, but we both found one that we loved and it looks like river rock. The problem was none of the stores had enough so we had to go all over the place to collect enough for the job. I walked through all of the stores just pushing the cart, actually forgot my cane....lol....I surprised myself at how well I did. Sending warm hugs and healing and happiness to you...Barb

Thanks renee, actually resting today. My brother and I installed the backsplash. I worked quite a few hours on my feet and bending. Of course my brother did all the designing, measuring and cutting...was my first time ever doing tile or anything like that. Is all done except for the grout and sealing it. It turned out beautiful....really gave the kitchen the wow factor! That was our last major job inside...now all that is left on the inside is clean up, paint, and putting things back together, detail work then I will order carpet....been being careful about lifting because lifting something too heavy does bother me yet....taking baby steps (sort of) lol....Hugs...Barb

I will be 4 wks po in 4 days. Also walking with cane and forget it once in a while. Using Tylenol Arthritis and ice. Still can't overdo. Doc said I can drive at 4 wks. Boyfriend wants to take road trip. Anyone have suggestions on hours of driving ?? As in helping with the driving 😬

Depends on how long road trip is. You may need to take breaks get out walk around. Possible to get blood clot if prolonged sitting. Have fun and enjoy! LD

Hi Mollyjr....that is what I was doing at first just accidently going off and forgetting to use it. I thought ok did that pretty good. So what I did was gradually wean myself from the cane. Each day I used it a little bit less than the day before. I haven't used my cane at all in at least 5 days now. Not sure about the road trip thing, guess it would depend how comfortable riding in the car is for you. I find that the car seat still makes me ache some, and don't think at this point I could go on a long trip in the car...but each of us are different....Hugs...Barb

Will be traveling in boyfriends big Chevy truck. I'll be able to stretch legs out as I am quite short. Will be taking 14 hour trip to South Dakota. Actually I'm more comfortable sitting than anything. Of course I'll bring my pillows and ice packs. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

14 hours is a long time and obviously you will be stopping for breaks etc but make sure you stop at least every hour or so for a good stretch and walk about for a few minutes.

      Enjoy your trip, sounds wonderful!

That's still a little too soon for a trip that long. I suggest making sure you take breaks and walk. Blood clots can still be a problem not sure if you are on any blood thinners. Consult your surgeon. Be safe, take good care of yourself. Best wishes. 🤗🤗 LD

I did talk to surgeon. He said pretty much what you said. Stretching/ walking at intervals. Yes I am still taking my blood thinning aspirin prescribed by doc. 😍
