4 Weeks Post-Surgery

Posted , 7 users are following.

Good morning All.  Today is my new hip's 4-week birthday!  I feel like I'm progressing well.  I still walk with a cane or a crutch inside my condo.  Outside I use a walker.  I've been advised to keep using the walker to ensure that I don't develop a limp.  I limped for so long before that surgery, they don't want that old muscle-memory to take over.

I have very little pain (and now the rash is subsiding).  If I try walking without a cane, I just feel a bit scared I think.  Or not the most stable.  So there is probably still some weakness to muscles.  I do my exercises regularly and I do 3 - 10 minute walks each day -- either up and down my condo hallway or outside.  No pain!!!!

I see my surgeon next week.  We'll do new X-rays so it will be interesting to see those and to hear what he has to say.

One of the best things about this recovery has been this forum.  So helpful.  Hugs to all,

Leslie

Thanks, Brenda.  Gaining confidence is huge.  I think it will come in baby steps and I have to try to be patient.  A long slog for sure!

Thanks, Linda!  The rash gets a bit better every day.  Hurts way less.  I am considering joining a nudist colony though because the area feels so much better with no clothes on!   I live in a condo and whoever the doorbell rings it's a real scramble to find clothes before answering the door!

      Hugs,

Well done Leslie. It's a great feeling isn't it when you have no pain. I walk with my trekking poles outside but nothing inside, concentrating all the time on how I'm walking & taking it real slllooowwwwwwwww! X

Hi Fern -- I keep forgetting to try my trekking poles.  I still use the cane (or sometimes a crutch) inside and the walker outside.  Really try to focus on walking without a limp and with a good stride.    Yes, taking it slow is the key I think....plus that will help us get stronger, I think.  You are doing a fantastic job with all this!  Thanks,  Leslie

    hi leslie,

    well done !

Many of us, including me, are so eager to ditch the walking aids and go solo when we are not ready yet -

ur body is not in allignmen yet and might take a little more time to get there- No wonder when you realize what has been done to her -'It is annoying and feels tedious at times to drag those things with you but it is for the better -

Cane will be your friend ... I made mine one - Still take it with me for you-never-know-moments -

It is not only my body that is out of balance but also my head - lightheadedness makes me feel unstable -

Amazing how that pain is gone and what we feel, or I feel, is sore and achy and stiff - I have to remember this ....

    big warm hug

      Hi Renée,

I am sorry to hear how you are felling these days - definitely not what I might call ' top form'.

What does your physician say about all this? Has there been any discussion about vitamins and supplements?

I ask because I have started increasing several and adding a few new ones which seem to be helping with overall energy and aches.

(consultations with both a naturopath and my GP).

Hoping things improve soon for you.

Hugs and healing light to you too.

So true, Renee.  I've been told to not give up the walking AIDS too soon.  I limped for a long time before the surgery and I think that is what my body remembers.  Before surgery, it took me a while to give up the feeling of pride and to use a cane.  I'm 67 but usually think I'm way younger than that.....way too young to use a cane!  Now I'm out with my walker and couldn't care any less how it looks.  I know I'm getting my body ready for years of good walking!

I think I still have that light headedness too.  What is that from?  I thought it was the drugs but I'm not taking anything strong anymore.  Maybe just cuz I sit so much more?  Weak core muscles?

I just have to take this day by day.  I really am not in any hurry.  I still have a couple good tennis tournaments coming up on TV and I want a good excuse to sit and watch them!

      Thanks and hugs,

      Leslie

Oh, about your comment of feeling 'sore, achy and stiff.'    ----   Just the last couple days I have been feeling like that a bit.    Before surgery, I often felt sore and achy.  I have fibromyalgia and that can make me feel like that.  But the first 3 weeks post surgery, I didn't have those feelings at all.  I thought maybe they were gone for good.  But now have been creeping back and I wonder if, really, they are a sign that I'm getting back to normal.  It's not debilitating for me but certainly isn't a pain-free state either.

I'm looking forward to being able to go to the pool because stretching out in water has always helped me.  And I love the hot tub.

      Take care of yourself,

      Leslie

      hi linda,

yeah, not in top form yet - GP finally is seeing me on a regular base regarding blood pressure - Since I am in Holland (June 2014) I have not been getting the ones precribed when I lived in L.A - but "close-enough" generic --- it was not working but was told to wait until THR was done - then got the 2nd one - all the while on same BP medication -

Celebrex was prescribed post-op for pain - well, that has an effect on BP meds - I mentioned this many many times - finally got one of those 24 hours boxes because of fainting spells -

SO got new meds and I have a homeopath  working with me ---

Interesting how in Los Angeles taking blood pressure, temperature and weight were standard at check in - here in Holland, nope - I have to make an appointment with some physician's aid to have BP checked -

Well ... I am constantly amazed by the vagueries of the various 'systems'!

It seems more than a little counter-productive to ignore your BP.

We're you on Celebrex for long? What are you getting now to deal with the pain?

Sometimes I dream of a joint (haha ... didn't intend the pun) hip surgeons' and physicians' forum examining all the unresolved or lingering problems faced by our forum members. In addition to potentially actually sling some, it might also prevent others from occurring. Of course, it might also suggest that the 'system' doesn't 'always' treat patients well ... esp re common follow-up problems that see in this forum so often.

Well .. that was a bit of a rant wasn't it?!

Bottom line though - i wish there was more to do to help.

With warmest hugs and wishes for a vastly improved recovery.

Hi Lesley, sounds like you're doing well ?? I'm 3wks post op,my question is,how long before you can stand up straight, i can't do that without a lot of pain and stiffness xx

Hi Pauline and thanks.  You're just a week behind me.  Fun to have people so close in 'stage.'     I haven't had trouble standing up straight so really can't help you.  Do you think it is the incision that is causing that?  Hopefully someone else will chime in.  You might post that question under a Start Your Own Discussion button and more people will see it.  Good luck, Leslie
