So im now 4 weeks 4 days post rectocele repair surgery and i feel like i am getting worse not better. Initially when i first got home i had little pain and wàs feeling fine. This last week though i am feeling more tired and just dont feel right. Teary and down. I though it might be from laying around the house. My medical certiificate has me returning to work tomorrow. I tried to go in for a few hours on Thursday of this week which was my 4 week mark. i am on a desk job and thought it might make me feel better being out of the house. Anyway after 3 hours sitting at my desk i started getting lower abdominal pain and feeling unwell. I had stopped bleeding for the past week but found on going to the loo my bleeding had returned. I feel like i should be better but everything just feels all wrong. I dont see my surgeon for another 3 weeks for my follow up visit. Im not sure if i should try and see a GP and get an extension on my medical certificate or just try and tough it out at work. Im just feeling so depressed and lost.

I would imagine it would take at least 6 weeks to repair...but I have felt very down and weepy so I know how you feel.....get checked out to put your mind at rest;;;I would!...Lots of good wishes to you x

Oh my goodness you wonder why you are feeling tired and weepy!! You should not be back to work so soon!! Even if you have a desk job. 8 weeks plus is the recovery time. I only had an anterior repair done and ended being off from my job for 13 weeks. Had planned to be off for 12 weeks anyway as have a fairly physical journal.

Please get signed off for a few more weeks. The return of your bleeding should be enough to tell/warn you that you are doing too much.

It takes three to four weeks for the anaesthetic to wear out of your system. Give your body time to heal.

You don't want the surgery to have been a waste of time.

    Hi Shelly

I'd definitely get an extended sick certificate. I the guidelines I have its recommended at least 6 weeks before returning to work for a desk job. You sound like you've overdone it . I'm nearly 4 weeks post op and nowhere near ready to go back to work.

I hope you feel better soon x

Hi Shelly. I understand how you are feeling as I was in the same boat at four weeks. I had fresh bleeding and abdominal pains and felt very depressed. I felt as though I was getting worse, not better. I am now nearly six weeks post op and things are better but I find that I get very tired in the afternoons. I don't think I will be back at work for a few more weeks yet. Get an extended certificate and rest up. Good luck.

    Hi there,

Please be careful, stitches often don't dissolve till 12 weeks and it can take much longer for deep tissues to recover so you still have to be really careful. Even when sitting all your weight consantrated down below and twisting from side to side stretching things not always good. It is early days yet at 4/5 weeks.

My post abdominal surgery leaflet says should still only be doing very light things up till 6 weeks so that by 6 weeks no more than 2 x 20 min walks, lifting no more than 1 litre in weight.

Don't understand why they think sitting at desk is OK, it's not like being relaxed at home, and you can still have heavy paperwork and files, and your twisting about, when really should be resting.

It is after all major surgery and the abdomen supports a the weight of all our internal organs, even when sitting upright.

Take as much time as you need, it's only a few more weeks and then you have the rest of your life, you don't want to be back having it done again too soon!

    Look after yourself,

    Phyl xx

Hi Shelly, seems much to early for going back to work . I am nearly 4 weeks post op and like you thought I was making progress but maybe overdid it one day so next day could hardly get off the sofa and feel fed up and down. Think there should be better information given to us on recovery and what realistically to expect!

Hope you get signed off for at least a few weeks and try to keep smiling.

Hun you are doing to much!! I have my ant repair in 4 weeks and would not return to work till my surgeon sign's me off.that's the

Advice off my surgeon.all that pressure on your healing isn't

Helping your wounds. Your body is telling you to slow down and

Rest. Hope this helps you.. And look after yourself, you need to

    rest up. 😘😘

Hi, I went back to a desk job after 6 weeks and it was OK but I would have really struggled at 4 weeks. I had some bleeding around 4-5 weeks but my consultant said that was normal as stitches start to dissolve. I made massive improvement in my last week of recovery which I'm sure was helped by having seen my consultant (about the bleeding) and her reassuring me that all was well. At 4 weeks I thought I would never feel normal again!

I was still v tired after that first week at work (in bed at 8 every night!) and felt "heavy" but was fine by the next morning. I  found that having a little footstool under my desk really helped as it relieved the pressure on my perineum. That said, if I could have had another couple of weeks off I think my overall recovery might have been quicker. (I'm 3.5 months post op and still get some achiness, though there's other stuff going on so might not be directly related to op). Good luck, please try not to fret, it does get better.

Same as all your other replies really. There is no way you should be back at work. 3-4 weeks your stitches start to tighten and it can make you feel very uncomfortable. Your body is using up all the reserve it has trying to heal it has nothing left at 4 weeks for you to be going back to working. This is major surgery you have had. Average recovery time is between 8-12 weeks and even then for some of us depending on our own personal healing times it can be a little longer.

Please get yourself to the GP and have them extend your signed time off work. It is so important you don't overdo it as you want the surgery to be a success. At 4 weeks I was only managing small walks twice a day and then would be sat with my feet up and still taking painkillers.

    Take care xxx

Hello. I do understand how you feel and to be honest a lot of your symptoms and feelings are perfectly normal. My advice would be not to return to work until you've seen your consultant so go back to your GP and ask for another sick note......it's too early even for a desk job. Sitting will still be uncomfortable after a short time. Your pain is worse because your internal sutures are tightening as your pelvic floor heals and that's only to be expected. Remember you've had major surgery and it can make you feel down and depressed. It may be worthwhile asking for a blood test to make sure you aren't anaemic and your thyroid function is normal.
