just found this site. Thought i was being totally paranoid with my aches and pains but seem to be like many other. 3 weeks after surgery physio told me to do the exercises given on both sides now to build up the muscle in the operated leg. Started doing them now the leg is sore im assuming over done it muscles hurt like hell and im even more stiff in the mornings than a week ago. Went for a walk yesterday hurt like hell this morning. Decided now to take things at my own pace (was convinced something was wrong and was going to get an xray) but i guess if i can walk its all normal pain. See surgeon on july 6th think i will take it from there. Recovery 6 week my arse oh yes i have the golf ball too. Good luck and thanks for everyone's comments its helped

    hi,

It will be 5 week tomorrow since I had my left hip done. The golf ball is annoying I had it for a full week at around 2 or 3 week then it disappeared for a bit but came back Yesterday DAMN!! I saw my surgeon yesterday and reassured me all symptoms are normal. Got me to ditch my crutch and had me walking unaided although with a little pain and a limp. Laid on treatment table he pushed my leg out to side and foot up to my bum which hurt and I wouldn't have done but that taught me not to be scared of it anymore. He said look if this was gonna dislocate I would have done it just then so get on with it and pain is good and makes everything stronger. So you keep at it and as long as your pain is not unbearable its good to build all muscle up and get better quicker. I think we are all a bit wary of doing too much and doing harm. I would do all of your exercises to the top of your pain barrier. Good luck to you and post your progress.

That sounds like very good advice. I've been worried about putting my hip in positions that might be more damaging. I'm 8 weeks post op, threw away my sticks after 2 weeks, do all the exercises and walk daily. As said by some, i think i'm over doing it and rushing things, as i'm feeling pain in my but and thigh when i've been doing so well. i'm not seeing my surgeon until 12 week post op. Had no contact from physio since the day i left hospital, day after op. My bugbear is, i was told i'd be better for it after a THR but after reading many of your posts, it sounds like l will always have to be careful for years to come. I'm a rambler and worried that i may never get back to hill walking like i did before. wishing i had left well alone now. My pain before the op was after activities and after resting, i could walk miles. i took prescription pain killers but don't want to have to take them after the op. any ramblers out there after THR? would love to hear how you are doing.

    hello

im 5 weeks since Left hip done, i think im recovering well, can walk without crutch but i waddle so keep crutch till waddle goes, i still get pain, but more achey feeling than bad pain, i havent had input from physio except with a booklet i came home with.

i see my consultant next week ( at 6 weeks post op).

im worried he will say i over do things as i still tend to bend more than 90 degrees, but hey, its not dislocated yet 😃

good luck all with your recovery

Hello Debbie, I am 7 weeks post op RIght THR, DIrect Superior Approach. same day discharge and walking with hiking poles the following day. Aside from pain in the incision area my new hip was feeling great. Staples removed two weeks post op, along with a physio appt that same day and the exact same thing you described happened to me....... physio said to do my standing exercises on both sides meaning that my full weight was on my surgical leg during the slow exercise reps to non-surgical side. I've had so much pain these last 4 weeks. Once i researched more i discovered that I should only exercise left leg while laying for the first 3 months while the new right-side joint has time for new bone growth to adhere to the implants. In the last two weeks i have also begun to experience tingling and numbness in my lower right leg and foot. I see my surgeon this week and am hoping there isn't any irreversible damage done. I would be interested in knowing when others began to place full weight on their operated leg (ie. standing only on that one leg).

I am 5 weeks post THR and my physio booklet shows one of the advanced exercises to be done after 4 weeks is standing with all weight on the operated leg.

I saw my physio last Friday which was exactly 6 weeks post op and he got me balancing on my operated leg which I did only for bout 5 seconds before pain and getting wobbly but said that was good for 6 weeks. There is pain in the thigh which I think is where the stem was hammered into the femur and takes a while for everything to grow around that on a uncemented I believe.
