I'm a 42 year old male been having hip problems for 8-10 years. I played lots of basketball in high school and played golf 2 or 3 x a week never remember injuring my hip. Went for my first MRI of hip probably in 08 or 09. Said looked normal nothing wrong no arthritis. I went on another year or 2 was still bad went for another MRI a year or 2 later. Still nothing was disappointing but went on another 2 or so years did a lot of reading came up I had a Labral tear and read MRI basically useless to diagnose them unless they use the dye or contrast so with my instructions they did. So after 3 or 4 MRI along with couple injections in the joint over this 5-7 year period I had a labral tear had it repaired in Nashville tn dr byrd supposed to be one of the best. After surgery discussed with him he said I had a lot going on but he cleaned out my bone spurs and I had fai impingement along with my labrum had calcified. Said he did his best but didn't sound promising I may have had some relief maybe a month or 2 but then bam back same as before 6 months later this was appx 3 years ago. I went appx 1 year ago trying to tell doctors what I needed in Lexington Ky this doesn't go over too well bruise a lot of egos along the way. I met with my first doctors he mentioned arthroscopic I bluntly said I tried that I need a new hip he said it's minimal arthritis blah blah so went to a different doctor there in the group 1 time appx 1 year ago he suggested open it up try to fix what need fixing but no thr I wasn't excited about that . So wait another year until appx 2 weeks ago meet with same dr in lex thinking be same thing put it off more pain etc. after looking at my X-rays he said is your quality of life bad I said it's terrible for a 42 year old used to be active this was on a Thursday he says I have an opening for next wed to do thr do you want to do it. I was shocked not ready but knew he takes months to get into always heard good things. So here I am 1.5 weeks post op of my left hip thr so far so good still sore but hopefully the surgery will be a success sorry so long

One and a half half weeks post op you will still be sore. Because you had a lot of stuff going on before healing may take longer. I was in my mid 50's when I saw first doc. Told me I was too young and to put up with pain. Didn't do exam properly. Saw GP who referred me another surgeon. He could not believe how stiff my hip was and surgery only option. Almost 2 years post op now and although I had infection and nerve damage originally dont regret it one bit. Muscles take two years to heal fully. Good luck with recovery.

No bending past 90 degrees, for a few weeks, until all the muscles around your hips have strengthened up again, you do realize they have dis-located your hip joint to be able to replace it, imagine the strength it takes to do that. although technique I suspect is helps alot, believe me you do not want to dis-locate, you think you were in pain prior, I was warned and came very very close doing something silly at about 10 days post THR, and paid the price, AHHHHHH, not good.
Are you still taking your strong pain killers to be able to move about, I would think so at this stage, you still need them, again I was about 14 days before I could drop my morning morphine, replaced with a lessor painkiller slowly slowly replaced my 4 hrly painkillers with lessor strength, took about 6 weeks before I was able to drop the night time painkillers completely.
Look up coastal physio wa for hip replacement, gives you physio exercises with photos, really good site, and what to do and what not to do, a west australian site, exactly the same as I was given by my hospital here in queensland, give you the ability to print it out, its a booklet.

Dear Rance
Congratulations! Just take things at whatever pace you are comfortable with but observe the 90 degrees rule for at least the first six weeks. I'm four months and still try to avoid breaking it as much as possible and have made a fantastic recovery.
Do the exercises and use two sticks or crutches until you have really rebuilt your muscles up so that you can confidently walk with a good gait. I really do not understand why some physios seem to encourage just one support too soon as IMO all it does is to delay a proper recovery!
Good luck.
Cheers Richard

hi rance,
warm welcome to the hippies forum - congratulations on your perseverance ...
What a story and don't worry about it being too long - it paid off at the end and now on your way to have quality of life again ---
I do believe that things happen for a reason and timing is perfect ... ( on hindsight of course) -
I am assuming that you had the anterior approach and therefor have less or hardly any restrictions -
Were you told you can ditch the crutches ? crutches are not only for keeping you balanced while you are learning to walk again, but also to prevent you from falling an/or dislocation in the beginning ...
you can relax now - Job well done -
let us know how you are getting on otherwise, okay
big warm hug
