42 years old and just been told i have severe degenerative wear to my left hip

Hi all, I'm 42 and been putting up with what I thought was a pulled muscle in my left hip for about a year now. After several visits to the doctor an xray shows I have severe degenerative wear and the right side just moderate.

Ive not had any accidents or ever really overdone it pounding the pavement etc.

I have a referal to see a specalist end of january.

Is it normal it clunk when you get out of bed?

To be honest im still in a bit of shock this has happened to me. Im relatively fit keep active and not overweight. I susppose if they give me an mri it will show what exactly is wrong with them?

I can remember back when I was really young having problems sitting with my legs crossed....maybe something wrong all that time ago?

I'm off to florida in a few months and to be honest completely stressed about the whole thing as Ive been saving for over 2 years and worried I wont be able to cope with all the walking over the 3 weeks. Is there anything lkke steriod injections that might help before the holiday...has anyone else tried this?

Feeling cheesed off is an understatement.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks Scott

Im 19 and waiting for my thr and have been to florida 3 times now.

Yes there is an incredible amount of walking but i just found it best to take breaks regularly because i wasnt on any tablets then.

It will be incredibly hard but try not to let the lain ruin your holiday.

And pack plenty of sun cream. I got 3rd degree burns last time which resulted in blisters all over my chest and face (so not attractive) and all the skin peeled from every inch of my body 😂

There was me feeling sorry for myself thinking why me at this age and you are only 19. Hope everything works out for you.

And yes will make sure i wear plenty of sunscreen and try regular breaks.

Guess Im not sure what i should be doing over the next few months. I suppose the specalist will give me a list of things what to do and what not to?

Haha your still allowed to feel sorry for yourself. Your still young and its a big life changing thing.

I was never given a list of what i can and cant do, your body tells you that but i was told i had to leave my job as it was completely unsuitable for me.

Are you going to be going to the theme parks there, the universal and island of adventure parks are amazing

Will be trying to fit in as much as i can in 3 weeks. Disney, universal, seaworld, busch gardens so think i will need another holiday to chill after.

Really looking forward to it but just worried about my hip putting a downer on things.

I lhave been to universal, disney and sea world but not busch gardens but dad did last time he went. Sea world is good but morally depresses me.

Not going to lie you will be in pain but just think, your still going to have an amazing holiday. Have you been before?

Oh and the flight is a serious killer

Went about 20 years ago. Think its changed alot since then.

I would dose myself up with co codomal for the flight. Long time to be sitting down. We try to get up every couple of hours for a stretch.

Im hoping maybe they might give me a cortisone injection just to help me for the holiday?

Im not sure. Although hospital new i was in pain i was never given any pain relief or help. I was only prescribed my first set of pain killer a few month ago. Maybe see if you can get some prescription pain killers from your gp?

Been taking strong brufen and co codomal for a long time due to a neck injury in my twenties so my stomach doesnt tolerate them too well.

Get your gp to prescribe omeprazole which protects you stomach from anti inflams

Ahh i see. Not quite sure what to suggest? Maybe a walking stick?

Iv got one but im to self concious to leave the house with it

Im afraid i would be the same. I know it silly but think i would prefer to struggle without a stick .

      I knkw what you mean.

I have mentioned on here before i was bullied for years about my disability and because i walkrd funny and couldnt sit on the floor, its deeply effected me and people still laugh at me now in shops when i have to get my mam or fiance help me try shoes on.

So i feel if i went out with a stick it would give people more of a reason to laugh and stare and i just cant cope with that.

But potentially we are making ourselves worse

I know what your saying about putting shoes on. Trying to reach my shoelaces is a nightmare😩

Im afraid theres not alot we can do about it and to be honest using a stick doesnt change the outcome in the end.

I cant bend my left lwg inward so putting socks on i have to put my leg behind my back but if the shoes have straps on or a zip on the inside i have to get help but you see people whispering and laughing at you.

But true but it may help with the pain when walking and its something to lean on if you have to stand for a long period of time
