42 years old and just been told i have severe degenerative wear to my left hip

Hi all, I'm 42 and been putting up with what I thought was a pulled muscle in my left hip for about a year now. After several visits to the doctor an xray shows I have severe degenerative wear and the right side just moderate.

Ive not had any accidents or ever really overdone it pounding the pavement etc.

I have a referal to see a specalist end of january.

Is it normal it clunk when you get out of bed?

To be honest im still in a bit of shock this has happened to me. Im relatively fit keep active and not overweight. I susppose if they give me an mri it will show what exactly is wrong with them?

I can remember back when I was really young having problems sitting with my legs crossed....maybe something wrong all that time ago?

I'm off to florida in a few months and to be honest completely stressed about the whole thing as Ive been saving for over 2 years and worried I wont be able to cope with all the walking over the 3 weeks. Is there anything lkke steriod injections that might help before the holiday...has anyone else tried this?

Feeling cheesed off is an understatement.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks Scott

Your post reminded me so much of my earlier posts Scott, and you have come to the right place for support and advice.

The shock when you first find out is awful and it will take a while for the whole idea to settle and sink in. I was quietly very upset and scared, and posted on here for support a lot in the earlier days. There are some lovely people on here that will help with any questions you have.

The degeneration seems to happen quickly with younger people because we are so active and busy - we have young children - life is demanding.

I am 40yrs old with two children and now post op by nearly six weeks. I love my sports and felt so sad to lose all of the things I love to do, no more family bike rides or walks. Everything slowly comes to a stand still but this surgery will give you your life back.

I tried the steroid shots. For the purposes of your holiday this is a good option. Mine lasted for 3 weeks - so you could time it to work across your holiday. It works more or less immediately give or take a day. Be warned though, it will hurt when it wears off as you have done so much that you can't actually do without it, so line up good pain relief. Also remember you have to wait 12 weeks between steroid injection and surgery to avoid deep joint infection.

Make the most of your holiday - and hopefully you can enjoy it. The surgery was much better than I anticipated, it will give you your life back. I felt immediately better after surgery - and you will too. Have a great holiday!!

Hi Rose thanks for your advice.

Its definately helped getting it all off my chest.

It all just seems so frustrating when you see everyone walking around normally.
