48 hour sleep pattern

Posted , 4 users are following.

For over 25 years I've had experienced a 48 hour sleep cycle. On alternate days I wake in the early hours usually around 2 to 3am. The following days I will wake at around 7 to 8am. The pattern is so regular that I can predict a month in advance which days  I will wake early. On the days I wake early, I am generally very upbeat and can keep going the whole day. Conversely, when I wake normally, I tend to be tired and lethargic. Generally, I now accept this as normal for me and can live with the situation. I sometimes wish I could have a more regular 24 hour sleep pattern. I also sometimes wonder if there is an underlying condition causing my unusual sleep pattern. My sister had a very similar issue for a number of years which makes me wonder if my sleep pattern is caused by my genetic make up.

I would be interested to know if others have a similar problem and if this is a recognised condition.

    Hey Steve,

No idea what up have but I have something similar. I have a very very regular 60 hour cycle, after which I will sleep 4 hours, sleeping further by a half hour or more and I'll be tired, cranky, groggy, all those unpleasant woken up up in midsleep feelings.

Would be very interested if others have weird sleep patterns like this.

That's what it is like for me now. I sleep only 5-6 hours on alternate days. The other days I manage 7 hrs with a break. When I do manage without break I end up wanting more and wake up lethargic.

Hi ..I too experienced something similar..my sleep cycle went AWOL for four mths...either sleeping from 8pm to 3 am..or no sleep..then getting 2hrs...I was then awake 36 hrs and sleeping 12 it lasted a couple of weeks and has now resolved itself..I sleep every night 6,7 hrs..never took sleepers..just stopped worrying..I've heard 48hr sleep cycle is usually found in blind people and very rare in people who are not
