Nantucket. Don't beat yourself up about it, you tried to do it the most difficult (and dangerous) way.

I would suggest that you start with an alcohol detox. That consists of taking medication like Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) on a reducing scale (high doses at the start reducing over about a week) and gets you a week under your belt without any withdrawal symptoms and you will get a much healthier feeling during that week. It doesn't guarantee that you will never drink again, but it does give you a good start and whoever supports you through your detox (maybe somebody from your local drug and alcohol team) will be able to talk through various coping strategies for the short-term future.

Thanks Paul , i will ask my doctor, i did give up for 6 months about 12 years ago but as i have said befor i thought i was cured but in my heart of hearts i know i must stop completly, i have read some of your coments to other people over the last day or so and have found them very helpfull so thanks paul, we are all not down and outs who i feel sorry for and really have little choice but to drown their sorrows as i know i would do in their situation, but i run my own business even when drinking hard which was every day from morning till night, also at aa meetings in the past i have meet teachers/ bankers and lorry drivers so this afects all classes of people as you probably already know, thanks again

Yes Nantucket. I am an independent alcohol treatment practitioner and work with people with alcohol problems. Alcohol isn't selective of any particular type of person, it can affect anyone from any section of the population.
