5-htp

Has anyone ever heard of 5-htp, it's supposed to help combat depression without the side affects you experience from prescription anti-deppresants.

It is also supposed to help with insomnia.

I tried it for about 3 months then ran out and couldn't afford to get anymore and to be honest I'm no different off it than I was on it

Thanks for posting this, i just read up some info on it, they say its its not been researched enough for proper conclusive results due to its non-patentable status, however further reading i know i couldn't myself take this but i might send the info i've found to a few others, thank you, Nick.

I used it last year with a vit b complex. It seemed to lift my depression but i had to stop using it as it gave me terrible urine infection/cystitis type symtons

Yes I have tried it but made me feel weird.  It is recommended by people on other sites.  I say anything is worth trying.  I take lots of supplements and hope they help.

If you want a 'herbel' remady st johns wort works better in my experiance. Though even that has side effects, headaches (only on high doses i found) and interacts with other medication including the contraceptive pill (makes it less effctive). But for anything serious you should see the GP. If its side effects your worried about start on a low dose and work up to the correct dosage. Also know yourself and use the lowest dose that still works at combating your depression.
