5 mile walk

Hello all

I haven't been on here in ages as I don't tend to have much time. I've been very slowly reducing my steroids without too much trouble and am now on 7.5mg a day.

On Sunday morning, we went for a 5 mile walk (haven't done a long walk in ages) and it seemed fine at the time. However, yesterday (Monday), I started feeling very tired (abnormally) and painful muscles across my upper chest and upper back (pectoral??). Would these muscles be affected by the walk??

Today, I have had to take the day off work due to the utter exhaustion I am feeling etc..

I have read on here about people feeling \"wiped out\" by this illness, but I had not experienced this before. Do you think the exhaustion and muscle ache is to do with PMR???

    Hello Beev

The exhaustion to which you refer could well have been caused by your over exertion but I feel that the pain in the areas you describe is unlikely to have been caused by your 5 mile walk. I remember being commited to a long, round walk back to the car a couple of years ago. The resultant pain, together with tiredness, was in my pelvic girdle and the top, front of my thighs. A blood test confirmed that the inflammation had increased which necessitated a rise in the steroid dose. If it is normal for you to have raised blood markers with your PMR then perhaps you could have a blood test. I would just add that a few weeks ago my husband felt a bit feverish with pain in the areas you describe (across the top of his chest and upper back area) and that was diagnosed as pharyngitis although he strangely didn't have a sore throat.....just a thought!

Do hope you feel better in the next couple of days but either way do let us know how you get on.

Oh dear Beev. That's such a shame, especially as you seemed to enjoy your walk. Sadly I do think that your feeling of exhaustion could be down to the PMR if my experience is anything to go by. I'm reducing the steroids as well (down to 9mgs) and although I feel fine most of the time if I have a strenuous day I really suffer for it the next day. I had a day in France a couple of weeks ago and I was fine, pretty chuffed with myself when I went to bed that night but the next day I was so exhausted I couldn't even think straight. The same happened when I took my Grandson to Thorpe Park, so now I try to plan my days, with a 'rest day' either side of an outing. So, so boring isn't it? I don't know about your aches and pains as I never get any pain in my chest or upper back even if I've had a strenuous day physically :puff: . I do hope you're feeling better now.

Hi Lizzie Ellen and mrs O

Thanks for your replies. I did do a lot of walking in Paris a couple of weeks ago and had no after effects, but was then on a 3 day cycle of 10mg, 7.5mg, 7.5mg. My walk this time did coincide with all 3 days being on 7.5. It does sound odd that these muscles should have been so affected but my son (who did a Sports degree) says that you use all of your muscles when you walk. I did an aerobics class last week without any problems after too.

I also started taking Alendronic Acid this Sunday (the day of the walk) - have any of you found this to be responsible for feelings of exhaustion?

I have spent nearly all day today asleep and resting - weird unnatural feeling of tiredness. Now my muscles are a bit better but the tiredness is still there. :?

    Hello again Beev

Yes it does sound PMR-connected now that you've explained you had just reduced from 10 to 7.5, as we all seem to find it advisable to take things easy during the first week or so of reducing from one dose to the other. I'm glad to hear that the muscle pain at least is improving and hopefully the fatigue will ease up also in the next couple of days. I'm sorry I'm unable to answer your query as to whether Alendronic Acid could be responsible for the tiredness as I'm unable to take bone protection meds, but, no doubt, someone will join in with their experience.

    Best wishes,

    Hello there

I have had the complete exhaustion you sometimes get with PMR but I have never really related mine to any particular extra exercise it has always appeared to come from nowhere but it is a complete wipeout when it comes and nothing but rest sorts it out If you are going to do anything extra it is never a good idea to reduce your steroids then My Dr has always told me not to reduce them if I am going on holiday as though it is supposed to be a rest the travelling never is I think it is good idea of Mrs O re the blood test if it continues for a bit longer as I have experienced flare ups with my 2nd bout of PMR ( I fight it but end up on the higher dose eventually )

I cant say I have had pains where you mention but certainly get them in my ribs with this bout as well as the usual ones this time

    Hope you feel better soon

Thanks to all. I think I will wait to see if all this stops before having blood test as I don't want to increase dose again if possible! I have rested completely today so will see how I feel in the morning. Come to think of it, each time I reduced even slightly ( have done that regime of tapering on a 3 day cycle that was recommended on here - I think a Swedish man suggested it?), I have had varying weirdness for a day or so. I did 10, 10 7.5 for 2 weeks, then 10, 7.5 for 2 weeks, then 10, 7.5, 7.5 for 2 weeks, now all 7.5 since Sunday.

Hope you are all doing well.

Is there anyone who lives in the Dorset/Somerset area? I live near Sherborne - would love to hear from anyone who would like to meet up.

By the way, you are supposed to continue taking the daily Adcal tablets when you are on Alendronic acid once a week, aren't you??

    Hi Beev,

That's what I've been told regarding Adcal. I take two a day. Someone mentioned on here that you shouldn't take the Adcal at the same time as the Prednisolone so I take one at lunch time and one in the evening. Hope you're getting on OK with the reduction. I'm on a really slow regime suggested by my Consultant. You have to have a Masters Degree in Pure Maths to keep up with it but other than that it seems to be going well  Keep well.
