Hi everyone, been on citalopram for 5 months on varying doses, have felt so much better most of the time, but seem to have a relapse when i get anxiety & intrusive thoughts, it always coincides with my period. im 47 & think im perimenopausal, but this is starting to tire me. anybody else get breakthrough symptoms around period? or is it just me

yes, although I am 5 months in on varying doses and I am still struggling. You should maybe consider HRT?

HI again chrissy off topic but how did you go increasing doses? i think im going to have to go up this time but im really nervous about it as i still have side effects from starting.

was never as bad increasing, as the first lot of increased anxiety, dont worry about increasing, for me it was much easier than the start up. good luck x

get your hormones checked by a blood test. i am in my late 20s but being on cit my periods causes complete relapse for a week or so. just coming out of a blip caused by a period now. maybe just knowing its ur period making you feel crap might make you feel better.

i know what you mean, but its hard to accept its the period , as its such a backward step, but always passes, thank god x

hi chrissy yes! i have been on it 7 weeks, 5 on 20 and i have been terrible the last week and got my period yesterday. Ive been anxious and really emotional and not sleeping well again after a period of feeling a bit better. This is my second time on cit and i had it last time too but not as bad as this. i am nearly 47 and i think it must have something to do with perimenopause too. What dose are you on?

im on 40 mg, its been a tough year, im 47 & this is very common, increased anxiety is indeed a real symptom of perimenopause. if you have facebook i recommend a group called the menopause support network, its a closed group & is very informative & supportive, was my lifeline earlier this year, when i was really strugling, emotional symptoms are rife amongst women our age.

thanks Chrissy. i should never have gone off the meds in April. id had a really good 4 and a bit years and arupidly thought that naybe tgey had fixed me for good. i wish someone had just said no stay on them if youre feeling well. Its been such a hard road going back on them and i really fear that they are just not going to work the same this time round.

ive done the same before, im not coming off again, think they do work again, but take longer each time, its always been a long time they take with me, also started low this time, so even longer , its a pain x

Thanks - how long did it take your second time until you started to feel better? i am nearly 8 weeks in but 5 on 20mg. ive had some improvement but not enough. How/why/when did you decide to increase?

it was a very slow process, but i think, i started to feel better on/ off from the first couple of months, but only subtle improvements. just keep going, the only time i struggle now is time of month, but that is not pleasant at all.

thanks chrissy - dis you start on 20 and work your way up? when did you go up to 30?

    • Posted

was on 10 first , then 20 for couple months, then 30 for about 2 months & 40 for about 10 weeks x

how did you make the decision to go from 20-30? Was it after the couple of months on 20 that you started to feel better?

did you have side effects going up? i will need to decide next week whether to go up. Most people on here say to stick with the one dose and just wait
