Hi

I am 5 months LTKR and getting pain down the outside of my knee, it is more prevalent at night when I’m bed. My knee is also still quite numb on the outside. Bend at around 120 so not that good, still excercising every day static bike and walking etc.

Anyone else experiencing this.

Natalie is right jonkee3.  120 is great.... Im 6 months out, and still have numbness on outside of knee.  My knee is still slightly swollen, Im icing right now; still have to ice at least twice a day.  My bend isn't that great,, but my ortho said it will come with in the year.   I got this surgery to be pain free, but I have been in worse pain, for 6 months now.  I will never have my other knee done... Never.................

    Hi Jonkee,

I am post TKR 8 months on left knee and 2 years on right knee. I did experience the same in both.

However, now, Thank God I have very little pain in either.

I just followed the rules RICE and I exercised as told. I also swim a small bit most days.

Hopefully you will be the same.

    God Bless,

    Al

I am now 10.5 months post op. Keep being told pain on outside of knee is tendonitis. If so, I said I got it when you replaced my knee.

I wasnt numb at first, but in last month or so, it has gone numb. I gave up on ever getting any real answers from my surgeon as I have seen hime once in 10 months, and he said tendonitis on his way out the door.

Cant stand how stiff my knee is every moming! Since it is now numb, the pain isnt aa intense. Can still tell when it is going to storm though! Good luck!

I had a super PT and now 5 months and signed off from seeing her, I just have to do the physio everyday.

Im now 121 degrees and the physiotherapist said this was really good and not to stretch anymore, so you at 120 is great.

I also suffer from numbness on the outside of my TKR, my Dr said that this was due to the Consultant in the operation cutting open the knee, pulling the skin etc back and damaging the 'nerve endings'.

It will repair in time, just got to put up with it !!!!

Before I lay down in bed at night I sit up in bed, get hold of bad knee and pull it upto me, keeping foot on the mattress 12 times, I find this helps me to curl up during the night.

Before I get out of bed in the morning I do the same.

If it aches during the day, you can get pain relief from your doctor as Ive tried everything over the counter and they just don't cut it......

    Hope this helps,

    Best wishes

At 5 months, you are not yet fully recovered so some pain and numbness is still to be expected at your point in "The Journey".  Try some Voltaren Gel (RX in the US, generic diclofenac elsewhere).  GREAT anti-inflammatory and pain reliever.  Use during the day and then again at bedtime.

The numbness is from the cut nerves.  Gets a bit better over time...a long time...but may never go away.  I'm 2 1/2 years post-op and I still feel a little numbness when I touch the outside of my knee.  Hint: Don't touch the outside of your knee.  Ignore it and get on with your life...small price to pay.

PS: +120 is just fine.  I was -1 / +123 at 3 months after a lot of PT and work at home.  Now, I'm 0 / +133.  Keep working at it.
