    Hi Juliet

Can you expand on what type of pain your experiencing. I had a TLHR last October and most of the time I'm fine but if I do exert myself I suffer the day after with stiffness in my thigh and it takes me a while to get going when I stand from sitting. I'm working back in my community job, but I still don't feel 100% obviously not got the arthritic pain but some days I feel I swoped that for another ache be it not as painful. Hopefully as time passes it will get better, I'm 55 and some days feel 65 and don't seem to have the stamina I had before my op perhaps I need to do more exercise, it's just when I do it knackers me out for the day after,

Hope it not too bad your pain, I only take painkillers at nighttime before bed.

    Regards Vicki 😀

      Hi Vicki

Thanks for replying!  I had a L THR in January and I've had what I feel was a difficult recovery and although I'm 44 at times I've felt 104!

I was progressing and had started doing aqua aerobics and gym work.   Suddenly 3-4 weeks ago I started getting a deep burning pain in my hip after walking for 1-2 minutes. I can potter around at home but if I walk out, I've timed it, by 3 minutes it's an intolerable pain and I get my walking stick out. It feels like the ball is rubbing in the socket.   Plus I have back pain and sciatic pain down my op leg as I had a slipped disc last year, which I'm not sure I fully recovered from. I'm getting (what I hope) is referred knee pain as well.

The GPs at my surgery have told me rest but be active, exercise but don't overdo it! Up your pain meds and lastly use walking stick at home again.... That just feels like a step backwards. I have no choice but to up the meds and I've asked for a referral back to my surgeon and the physio again. The GPs having referred me for an X-ray in May that didn't show any tears or dislocation are now stumped.

Bleurgh..... Had to get THAT off my chest. SO disappointing to feel pain I hip still.

I had a burning around the hip joint and spoke with the physio about it she told me they cut through the bursa surrounding the hip joint and the burning is this repairing 😁 not sure about that but did Google bursa and it's a sack of fluid to protect joints if this becomes inflamed you get bursitis, makes some sense but when I do to much I ache like hell and I do keep trying, swimming is my thing at the mo and doing lots of yoga type exercises in the water, did a bike ride last weekend in the flat about 5 miles and was proper knackered for about 3 days after. Annoying because before my op was doing yoga climbed kinder scout and did a nine mile walk for charity, seems like a distant memory now, my hubby says I need to do more to improve stamina but when doing knackers you out it seems hard to get going. Anyway winge over 😏hope you start to improve soon

      Regards Vicki

Hi Juliet... I have had three THR.  The advice I would give you is that every person is different. It has taken me a long time to recover. I think it depends on how far gone your hip was pre-surgery.  Moving is a good thing but you must listen to your body. If it's screaming go sit down ... i became very weak post surgery and after physical therapy ran out I wasn't even 75%.  When I felt able I hired a personal trainer to help me.  I don't expect I will ever be the same but if I can make myself stronger I'm all for it. Just be patient and work it everyday

Bursa info very interesting, just googled it. Am going to go 'old school' and ice my hip again like the early days post op. There does seem to be more swelling there lately.
