Hi, I’m 5 months PP I had a forceps delivery with an episiotomy - the episiotomy is all healed fine! I can pee and poo fine, I can’t have sex as it’s very uncomfortable afterwards and I constantly feel like there’s something there in my vagina and bum area like a heavy sensation I’m 27 years old and it was my first baby this is very depressing as I can’t seem to get any help from GP refusing to give me a smear test now I have requested to pay for one is anyone else experiencing this or have been through it and now it’s better? I’ve been doing pelvic floor excises but I’m still struggling to what is wrong with me I can’t stand for long periods of time I can’t sit down without feeling that there’s something there I’m at wits end bursting into tears every time I think about it.

Thank you

You may have had a slight prolapse where the wall between the vagina and rectum has collapsed slightly and is pushing forwards. I have a stage 1 prolapse and it didn’t occur for ages after my sons birth. I had an episiotomy too. When it first happened it felt awful down below, like something was pushing out my vagina and I could see a bulge. Can you see anything down there that looks different to normal? Like more flesh at the opening of the vagina? Don’t panic if this is what it is. I had a course of physio to help with pelvic floor exercises and pretty soon it all felt more normal down there.

Has your doctor examined you? Ask to be referred to a gynaecologist if you’re still not happy. Having a baby does f**k things up down there and you’re still recovering from the trauma especially if you had forceps and a cut.  But don’t panic, there are things that can help if it is a prolapse. Good luck!

Hi Ruth thank you for your reply I appreciate it, I can’t see anything down below my partner says it also seems tight down there excuse the phrase but I know that I can feel something heavy and horrible if that makes sense. I have tried so many times to be referred they keep telling me it’s all in my head or I need to give it longer but I know it’s just getting worse xx

Do things seem different to you if you insert your finger inside? You have a right to ask to be referred to a gynaecologist if that is what you want. Does the heavy feeling get worse after you’ve been standing or walking? How does it feel first thing in the morning? I know that for months after the birth I felt an ache and heaviness down below after walking or standing. How often do you do pelvic floor exercises and how exactly are you doing them?

I haven’t put a finger inside I really don’t want to touch it, I’ve been affected mentally so much and traumatised I can’t even look at it. Well my GP has said this morning that it can take up to 3 months now to see a gynaecologist I don’t know if I can wait that long it feels the same all day everyday and it gets worse when standing and walking. I’ve been swimming as well to help the pelvic floor that isn’t helping xx

If I were you I would still get referred to a gynaecologist on the nhs. What you could also do is consider seeing a private gynaecologist sooner, if that’s something you can afford?

With pelvic floors I was told to do 3 lots every day. Work up to 10 long and slow holds of 10 seconds each and then 10 quick ones.
