5 Positive Things About Getting A Full Hip Replacement

Posted , 12 users are following.

To All Hippies,

Do you remember how terrified you were when you first found out that you'd need a Full Hip Replacement (FHR)?  This is such a common procedure now and high success rates, but this doesn't always calm our fears prior to the surgery.

Why don't we hippies reach out to posible newbies who are contemplating a FHR and tell them what we experienced by listing  5 POSITIVE THINGS about getting our FHR.  I'll go first:

1.  The surgery seemed quicker and easier than I'd expected and I went home the second day.

2.  The pain level was very managable with meds, ice packs and rest.

3.  I only needed walking aids (walker/crutches/cane) for the first 8-10 days.

4.  Physical Therapy wasn't too bad at all.  In fact after 8-10 weeks I could comfortably get around and others couldn't believe that I'd ever had the surgery.

5.  It's now been 8 months, absolutely no pain, back to regular lifestyle, and most days forget that I had a FHRsmile

    Hi Kimberley,

What a lovely idea to list the positive things about having a FHR! I am now on week ten and getting back to normal!! It's been the best decision I have made and wish I had it done sooner😄 But here's my 5 positive things!

    1. The weeks have gone by so quickly that some days I am beginning to forget that I had a FHR! ( especially after babysitting my 4 wonderful grandkids for a long weekend )

    2. I am off all pain medication and have been since week 3. I was taking so much pain meds ( only paracetamol as all others made me so sick) that I was way over using them! I can now eat again and enjoy food and not feel sick!

    3. I gave up my one crutch last week and have been walking without it and feel like a normal person again( the odd limp when I forget myself 😂wink

    4. The pain is gone! This is so life changing! Everyone says I look so refreshed and I am not going around with the sign of constant pain on my face😏

    5. This is a silly one but I am happy😊I have started back at work but only 3/4 hours and easing back into over next few weeks( very physical job)

I enjoy housework, gardening and having a blast with the grandkids! I can cope again and feel like dancing💃 ( and plan to at my daughters wedding in 3 months)

Hope this helps someone and I know everyone doesn't have it as easy as this but I cannot believe how much I have improved in 10 weeks!!!

My body does let me know when I have overdone it and it gives me a firm kick in the butt to tell me to slow down but here's to many more months of getting stronger and maybe doing a parachute jump this year😂😂😊

      Wow... a parachute jump??

I thought I was doing well being able to keep up with my 9 year old grandson, and play with my 4 legged babies (in pic) again.

It's amazing how quickly the first few weeks go by.  I'm so glad that you are doing wellsmile

Good points though it is quite understandable that it is easy to dwell on the possible negatives.

I too had a very easy time and a rapid recovery and returned to a physically demanding self employed job within less than a couple of months.

For me there really was no realistic alternative to having a total hip replacement.

    Cheers Richard

    Hi

Im 6 weeks post op,I was absolutely terrified prior to THR, despite my positivity.

    1) The whole procedure is over before you know it, no memory at all.

    2) fantastic after care and brilliant pain medication, discharge home on day 3

3)no nasty groin or hip pain

    4) the days just fly by,before you know it,you will be pain free, mobile and every day life will be so much easier, hello new lease of life.

    5) one crutch used after a week and a half, each step taken, gets better and better, furthering the distance week by week. Made me smile frome ear to ear.

Good luck and best wishes to anyone reading this,my one thing to say after the procedure, that kept me going is stay positive, not always easy but keep it in mind,it really really helps

    Great idea Kimberley!

I think my 5 are probably similar to everyone elses though.....

    1. Spinal with sedation, brilliant, all over in a flash, and eating and walking later the same day.

    2. The whole hospital experience, the nurses were so kind, physios very patient, and out on day 2

    3. Using the crutches much easier than I expected, hippity hoppity.... Strolling out for lunch on day 7

    4. Being pretty much pain free immediately

    5. Feeling amazingly comfortable back on my bike!

I could go on and on...and how could I not mention my wonderful (and rather good looking!) surgeon, who did such a brilliant job.

      Question, when was your THR?

Hi Kebra, I had my THR last July, and I know that I was really lucky with my recovery. (And with my lovely surgeon!) Everything was very straight forward, and for that I'm grateful. I hope it all goes really well for you and I'll be thinking of you next week. (I'll hopefully be skiing. I'll keep you posted on that...) Wishing you all the best, Judith

      Hi Judith,

So many of us have had positive experiences.  The best thing is no longer having to deal with the daily pain.

The fact that you also had a good looking surgeon was just icing on the cakesmile
